Dear all,

I've got problem with my NetWorker...
Last Year i've backup any server with full backup methode with Legato NetWorker Evaluation copy

right now i want recover that with Legato Networker (licensed), it can not recovered (tape unrecognized)...

i used tape library...
i try with nrjb -I the tape not registered in the NetWorker media data base...

can you help me please...?

Correct. As long as this media is unknown to the NW media database, it will not mount it.

You must insert the tape using the scanner command:
scanner -i device_name

This re-adds the infos for the file and the media index. After that, you
should be able to mount the tape and recover your data.

i've tried that steps,
the message alert like this :

# scanner -i /dev/rmt/1mnb
scanner: NetWorker notice: no tape label found
scanner: scanning for valid records...
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: Found valid record:
scanner: volume id 412283649
scanner: file number 31
scanner: record number 1
scanner: volume name `'
scanner: media index cannot be rebuilt
#

scanner: NetWorker notice: no tape label found... this tells me that there is no valid NetWorker label. The same information is revealed when you tried to inventory the tape.

This indicates that there may be no valid data to recover from, or at the very least, the tape label was damaged.

Since this data is from last year, try using the same NetWorker version, and also try to duplicate the same configurations. Clean the drives. Then, run scanner -v (device) to see if there is any savesets that scanner can detect.

i've tried to setup legato networker server with evaluation copy again and run command scanner with v option, the message appear like this:

# scanner -v /dev/rmt/1m
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1m for read
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: read: 0 bytes
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1m for read
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: read: 0 bytes
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1m for read
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: read: 0 bytes
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1m for read
scanner: read: 65536 bytes
scanner: read: 0 bytes

/dev/rmt/1m is not a no-rewind device name, you need to specify no-rewind device names to Networker.

You must use Berkeley no rewind tapes. So the first device name was better /dev/rmt/1mbn.

A problem could be that this tape has been written with another block size
than what you use right now.

However, NW will always write the labels with 32kB blocks, so it must find
a valid label, if you (or somebody else ?) do not have accidentally
overwritten it with another command. And it looks like this has been done - at least
a label has been written to. This would explain why NW cannot find a
label but can sychronize right after the beginning. Of course it
could also be a compatibility issue (misalignment) or others.

i've tried with the scanner with vvv option the result is :

# scanner -vvv /dev/rmt/1mnb
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1mnb for read
scanner: Rewinding...
scanner: Rewinding done
scanner: Reading the label...
scanner: Reading the label done
scanner: scanning for valid records...
scanner: read: 0 bytes
scanner: Opened /dev/rmt/1mnb for read
scanner: read: -1 bytes : I/O error
scanner: Cannot continue
scanner: No valid tape records found

It looks like the tape has corrupted data. Originally, it couldn't find the label, now it's saying it can't read the data.

The data may still be recoverable. However this may involve the use of third party data recovery services.

Try to make sure that the device is configured correctly. test backing up and recovering to that drive.

Also contact Legato. They have a utility that can read the tape to tell you what records are on the tape and what the record lengths are. This utility (i believe called taperead) won't recover the data, but will at least tell you what the record lengths are. There should be two 32K blocks of tape labels, followed by blocks of backup data.

Good luck.

thanks wallace for your advice...
