We are in the process of setting up an new exchange 2000 server. Exchange is installed and I am able to create mailboxes for users and once I set up their mailbox I went into outlook on the client and set up their account there. My problem is that I am able to send messages but the person that it is sent to never receives them (they just sit on our server) and our clients can not receive any messages at all. When I go into exchange system manager I can see that the user was able to logon to their mailbox and at what time and I can also see how many items are in their mailbox but they are still unable to receive them. What am I missing?

Is there a firewall? If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

OK it ahs been over 24 hours since the MX record was added at BellSouth and I can send messages with no trouble but I am still unable to receive them. Port 25 on the router has been forwared to my e-mail server and I can go on my e-mail server and see that I am logged onto my mailbox and that I have messages waiting but they are still not being delivered to Outlook. What piece am I missing on this end to get these messages delivered?

No we don't have a firewall yet and the router has firewall capabilites but none have been enabled.

OK, so they are coming in now.
Are they all stuck in your incoming queue? If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

Yes they are stuck. I can go into exchange manager and see my mailbox and that I am logged onto it and I can see a total of 8 messages in the queue but they are not reaching me when I am in outlook.

Are they in your mailbox or still in a queue? If so, which queue and can you Unfreeze the queue? If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

Alright now here we go again!! Now I am able to receive mail from internal users but not from external ones. Still not bounce back messages give to someone trying to send from the outside so where are they going and how do I get them?

I sent a message from an outside account to nonexistent account in our root domain and I immediately got a bounce back saying that it couldn't find a mailbox by that name. So, it looks like that it is hitting our router and trying to find e-mail addresses in our root domain and not in the domain that our exchange server is in.

The bounced message gives the ip address of our router and says that it couldn't deliver the message because it couldn't find a mailbox with that name.

The way we have it set up here is we have a forest with two domains. We have our root domain and then we have another domain within the forest that hosts our exchange server. Both domains trust each other.

What needs to be done so the messages sent to the domain with our exchange server actually go to that domain and not the root domain?

The root doamin needs to accept mail for the other domain, add that in the default Policies. The you need to forward that mail to the other domain. You can use an X400 connector for that. If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

Which default policies are you referring to and where do I change that?

Is there an X400 connector in the root domain or does this get set up in the exchange manager on the exchange server?

All of my exchange stuff is of course on the exchange server itself and not in the root of the domain.

Recipients - Recip[ients Policies
Right Click the Default Policy - Propertie - Email addresses If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

What about the x400 connector? Where does that get set up?

I went into the exchange system manaager and tried to set up the X400 connector and I get the message about needing to have a stack so I tried to do that by right clicking on X400 and then there should be an option for new but there wasn't.

A new connector between the 2 exchange server, on both ends. If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.

There is only one exchange server and it is not in the root domain. How can I set up a connector on the root end without exchange being installed on it? I know that the mail is getting past the router because if mail is sent to a nonexistent account then a message comes back and says that there is no mailbox for that person. The mail that is sent to a good mailbox never gets returned or rejected so where is it going since there isn't an exchange server on the root domain?

Sorry, I spoke too soon. I just checked the external e-mail account and all e-mails sent to the domain that the exchange server is in did get returned about two days after they were sent.

Since I have my router forwarding port 25 right to my exchange server why isn't it just sending the mail there?

o, i see, i wrongly assumed you meant 2 servers, sorry for the confusion.
Ok then.
Are both domains defined in your Default Recipient Policy?
And when you get an email back from nonexistant, is it really YOUR server sending it back?
If so, the delivered ones should be in the queues somewhere. If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too.
