Can't receive emails thru the SMTP connector

I've set up Exchange Server 2003 (as part of Small Business Server) on a client's network successfully. All working fine for three weeks now. I used DNS to send mail and a POP3 global mailbox to collect mail from their ISP.

I got SBS 2003 for my own network and as I am using Symantec Antivirus 9.0 Multi-Tier Protection I have been warned off using POP3 with this. Has anyone got Exchange working with this?

After much tweaking I can send out okay, but I'm not receiving any external emails through the SMTP connector. Also since tweaking I have to force local emails by clicking send/receive.

I am glad I am having the problems, rather than my clients, but can anyone offer any advice on the problems I'm having??

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Mike,

Try a telnet to your server on port 25 from the command box : "telnet <servername> 25" where servername is your internal name or ip-address

If this works, try the same from the outside (internet)
If this should't work, you have to check your firewall settings or antivirus settings.

Are you using SMTP for receiving mail or the SBS POP3 connector ?

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for a quick reply.

I am using SMTP to receive mail and as part of the tweaking I had to turn off ETRN/TURN (originally set up TURN with Auth).

I can telnet the SBS server by name on port 25 as you suggest on the LAN. I can also telnet from another network by the mail ip address 80.94.196.10 which I share with many others.

Best regards,

Mike
