IE
When I access my company's online webmail from home everything works fine until I decide to "Reply" to an e-mail. Then Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 opens a second window which just sits there and remains blank. Version 6.0 of the same software on a different PC works fine. I've examined the settings of Explorer and the Network Connection settings until I'm blue in the face but can't identify what the problem is. I presume it's some security setting that I can't see. The OS in both cases is Windows 2000 Pro.

Anybody able to help?

I'll answer my own question since noone else has.

My solution was to upgrade to MSIE 6.0. Solved the problem!

I notice a couple of other posts after mine that talk of blank windows with 5.5 so maybe there is some general underlying problem.

Esmonde,

From this site, forgot which thread.

hey! i just found out how to fix the transparent popup problem in IE6...

go here, download and run it...and it replaces Oleaut32.dll to a newer version, and it worked...i can now get popups to work in IE6!!! hope this works for you too!

Hey, you just beat me to it! In fact I have just used SFC to replace that file from a full install version of the IE6 cabs. It had been overwritten by a program written in VB6 (not by me!), and this had also prevented clicking on links in emails to launch IE6 and launching a new Window when IE6 was already open.

I want to thank you PROFUSELY for posting that solution. This has been driving me crazy for a couple of weeks. I could only right click to open a new window if afer the transparent "ghost" appeared then clicking "stop" and "refresh". What a nuisance. I have no idea which program I recently installed that clobbered the shell opening but the file mcrepair.exe did the trick. Answer "yes" to overwriting existing files with OLDER ones. That's the WHOLE problem. AGAIN THANKS!

It also works for me (ie 5.5 sp2). I downloaded the patch mcrepair.exe, ran it, only accepted to replace oleaut32.dll, reboot and all is ok. Alleluliah !

Previously I had tried this (taken from this forum):

<<Run each of the following from start/run:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
>>
It didn't work to repair the bug but it indicated me that there was a problem with oleaut32.dll. That's why I decided to replace only this dll

thanks for that info. As I wrote, I already fixed my problem by installing 6.0 but it's still good to know how to fix the problem.
