I have RedHat 7.3 with a Sony 9000 SCSI-2 tape dirve.
I can tar a set of files to the tape and I will be able to see it with tar -tvf /dev/tape.

I have tried to move past the first archive using the "mt"
tools. For what ever reason I always end up a block 0.

Any recommendations on how I get past the first (or second)
archive and add another archive?

Thanks,
John

Are you (or have you tried) passing the -A flag (concatenate) instead of the -c flag (create) to the tar command?

Not sure about Linux but other *nixes have different devices (under /dev) depending on whether or not you want to rewind the tape or not. If you are using a auto-rewinding device with your "mt" command then it will automatically rewind after it has completed. If this also applies on Linux then you'll need to find out the device name for the non-rewinding device for your tape drive.

Thanks to both Wonboodoo and justice41.

For a device that auto rewinds it seems to be /dev/st0.
For a device that does NOT auto rewind it seems to be /dev/nst0.

Thanks to all
