We rebooted our SCO 5.06 system last night and now no one can print to ANY of the printers unless we log in as ROOT first. Most of our printers are on Intel Proprinter Print Servers, but some are on JetDirect. We have run the Software Manager and Integrity and FIXMOG programs, but still no luck. HELP!!!!

When you say you can't print, do you receive an error message? Do the jobs go into the queue, but not to the printer?

Any error messages you've received and commands you've used to print would help troubleshooting. Annihilannic.

See if the print spooler is running. 'lpstat -t'.

I copied the screen so you can see the printer command and the error I get. If I log in as ROOT or SU, it prints fine with no error.

omni~/drv2/usr/tmg $ lp -dMIS_LASER_PR Testing
UX:lp: ERROR: Can't establish contact with the LP print service.
TO FIX: Either the LP print service has stopped,
or all message channels are busy. If
problem continues, get help from
system administrator.

Have you rebooted and tried again?
Have manually shutdown the print service and then restarted it?

This sounds to me like a user permission error. I think you may have users who are denied permission to the lp service. Couple of things you can check here:

1. Look at the /usr/bin/lp file permissions. Make sure this is correct for how you want it. on our system we have it as this:
---x--x--x 1 bin lp

2. Next, go into scoadmin and verify ALL of the software. Make sure you select (spacebar) all of the software modules, as you may have errors in multiple places.

Hope that helps. [afro2]

We figured it out. Our remote print service was corrupted. We removed the remote print service, then re-added it. That allowed everyone to print to printers set up as local, but not Remote Printers. Then we deleted those printers and re-set them up, ran the Software Manager and everything is working again.
