I'm running an old Dos program on XP. There are alot of things I have been able to fix, but this isn't one of them.
I have a batch file that contains one command:

copy h:\division\or_sch_f.txt lpt1

obviously, it is just supposed to print a specific text doc to the printer on lpt1. When the batch file is run it opens the windows\system32\cmd.exe window and displays the above command.
That's it. No printing. No nothing. Just hangs there and doesn't return to a c: prompt.

Odd thing is this... One user's default printer is an HP Desktop printer. Works fine for her. But we don't use HP's across the house, we use Lexmark.

Rams Rule!!

Ruling out the simple causes: The Lexmark is not a USB printer, right?

That's correct Rams Rule!!

Is it a shared printer rather than a local printer?

You might want to try the XP Help and Support Center's Printing Troublshooter:

Type
Code:
hcp://help/tshoot/tsprint.htm
into the Start|Run dialog.

This tool can give you advice about mapping shared printers to a "device" like lpt1 as well as dealing with other printing problems.

Thanks. Found my answer. At cmd.exe:
net use lptx: \\printserver\sharename /persistent:yes
where x is the number of the LPT port.

worked great. Rams Rule!!
