Hello:

After startup, when I click CTRL ALT DEL, I see . . .
EXPLORER
SYSTRAY
RNAAPP

I install programs daily and don't want anything "starting up" automatically ( so I don't have to always CTRL ALT DEL before installing).

However, I can't seem to be able to prevent RNAAPP from appearing in CTRL ALT DEL.

I got rid of the other STARTUP PROGRAMS by using "MSCONFIG", by using Taskbar Settings/Remove/Startup, and by deleting entries in REGISTRY (RUN).

I can't find anywhere to stop this RNAAPP though. I know it is Dial-Up Networking . . . and that it is not needed at STARTUP because it will startup automatically when I SIGN-ON to the Internet.

Anyway to stop this RNAAPP from starting up automatically?

MY COMPUTER:
Hewlett-Packard Vectra VA6/200DT
Windows 98SE 4.10.2222 A
AOL 8.0 PLUS
Pentium PRO Processor, 200MHz
64MB RAM SIMM EDO
4GB Hewlett-Packard Hard Drive
IE6 SP5

Thank you for any info.

What kind of Net connection do you use? Modem? Do you also use MSN messenger? Or AIM, or ICQ? Are they connecting automatically?
The other thing to check for is one of those nasty porn dialers which dial up Russia or some other third world country to run up your phone bill.

Hello JONTMKE and CARRR:

Thanks for reply. I used to use "End It All" until I realized that if I didn't allow anything to START-UP, I wouldn't need "End It All."

That other site entails a lot of work, guess I shouldn't complain about using CTRL ALT DEL "once" - before installing something. :>)

THE STORY:
The hard drive (with Win98FE) showed 58-BAD CLUSTERS on the first 9% of Scandisk Surface Scan ("thorough").

Received a NEW hard drive from company (for work at home) which came with Windows NT installed.

Windows NT needed the previous user's LOGON PASSWORD. He left the company.

Rather than waste the weekend trying to find a way to get past this LOGON problem - I installed Win98SE.

When it came to MODEM installation - I allowed "STANDARD MODEM" to be setup.

After Win98SE installation, I removed "Standard Modem" and used the CD that came with the Modem to set it up.

I never checked in SAFE MODE / DEVICE MANAGER . . . to see if there were now TWO entries under MODEM (if that could be the problem).

This MODEM is "3COM U.S. ROBOTICS - 56K External FaxModem."

I also upgraded AOL 7.0 to AOL 8.0 PLUS.

I notice "RNAAPP.EXE" (4.10.2222) in . . .
C:\Windows\System
C:\Program Files\America Online 8.0\net\Win98SE

I find NO INSTANCE of "RNAAPP" or "RNAAPP.EXE" in the Registry at all (strange !!!) Will check again.

I avoid PORN sites (as much as you can these days) - so I don't know about the "Russia" thing. Although things could sneak through - I guess.

I use "Dial-Up" Modem to get online.

That's about all I can add to this for now.

Thank you for the guidance and info. Any other ideas ??

From what I understand, it's part of Dial-Up, and you need it for dialing out... if you're not using the modem that's in the computer (if, for example, you're on ADSL or Cable) just remove the dial-up from your networking properties, and it will remove RNAAPP as well.

Cheers,

In MSCONFIG is there any programs listed that could be Internet related? IM clients, auto updaters, etc.

Thanks REALM174 for reply - yes, I use that modem to get online.

Thanks JONTMKE for reply - here's MSCONFIG . . .

ScanRegistry (checked)
SystemTray (checked)
RealTray (unchecked - Internet Related)
LoadPowerProfile (unchecked)
TaskMonitor (unchecked)
SchedulingAgent (unchecked)

This is the "first" time in over 5-years that I cannot stop something from automatically appearing in CTRL ALT DEL box.

Rechecked REGISTRY again for "Rnaapp" and it only showed up twice in (MRU) which is my Windows (Find).

Best regards to all, BAFFLED.

RNAAPP is a Windows system file that is called by something else. It is what talks to your modem to do the dialing. But, something else has to call the program for it so start.

Not necessarily. It was a known problem in the 9x OS's that rnaapp failed to close at the end of sessions, stayed alive in memory, yadayadayada...a lingering pain. Granted, it should be called by a comm program, but....

You are correct carr, rnaapp does tend to stay running after you disconnect. But, I think he was saying that he was not manually connecting at all and could not figure out where it was started from.

Hello CARRR and JONTMKE:

Yes, RNAAPP is starting up as soon as I startup my computer.
As soon as Desktop appears, I CTRL ALT DEL and see . . .
EXPLORER
SYSTRAY
RNAAPP

Following JONTMKE info, I checked ALL my installed programs that were Internet-Related and disabling or removed them:

RealPlayer StartCenter
Phone Dialer
Networking
etc.

RNAAPP is still there.

I have Win98SE on BOTH computers, one has an Internal modem and the other has an External modem.

The problem computer has the "External 3COM Modem" which has a shortcut for ONLINE REGISTERING.

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer http:\\ (etc).

I don't know how to disable this shortcut which seems to call up Internet Explorer to get me online to Register.

Maybe this is the culprit - I don't know.

On TASKBAR (left side) I see "AOL Icon, Outlook Express Icon, Internet Explorer Icon, Show Desktop Icon."

On TASKBAR (right side - next to clock) are NO Icons at all.

I'm thinking of a Freeware/Utility I can install that will control my STARTUP PROGRAMS - maybe I can choose RNAAPP then and stop it's starting up. (Anyone know the name of this kind of Utility which does this ?)

Thanks again for the replies and patience and info.

Look in your win.ini file for a reference for 3com. Try removing it...restart...still happening?

The icons on the left are shortcuts to start the programs. What if anything is down by the clock?
I see you use AOL? Does it start up right away? How about an antivirus program? Maybe it is auto dialing to get new definitions? How about your email program? Check them all for settings and change them to manual if they are not already.

Hello again, JONTMKE and CARRR:

Well after trying everything under the sun, I guess I had to finally find the solution.

Control Panel
Internet Options
Connections
(uncheck) "Always dial my default connection"
(CHECK) "Never dial my default connection"

NOW, finally, CTRL ALT DEL shows only EXPLORER and SYSTRAY after starting up my computer.

What's STRANGE is that BOTH machines I use have Win98SE, AOL 8.0a PLUS and IE6 installed on them . . . but, those (above) "uncheck and CHECK" options have to be (opposite) on each machine for RNAAPP to not show up in CTRL ALT DEL after startup. (Very weird to me !!!!)

Wish I could remember all those "disablings" I did on other programs, but since this is a NEW Win98SE install . . . I can always start over again.

Glad this is over . . . thank you for being there for the info and support.

Best regards from Staten Island, New York.

I see that this has been completed, but wanted to drop an addendum here. I had the same problem, and found this rather unique work-around:

Of course there is no better solution than actually tracking the problem and fixing it, but if you need uptime NOW and the real solution later, this works beautifully.

Oh, ZIPDOG where were you when I was going crazy? :>)

Very good information, though. You probably ran across my post afterwards - but maybe OUR solutions will be of help to someone somewhere sometime.

Thanks for reply.
