I am untrained in UNIX but have been given a machine setup with Digital Unix on which to configure a Firewall. I know that the UNIX installation follwed step by step directions. However I can not ping the box from anywhere on our network and vice versa. (If I ping it locally it will give me back the proper response.) Any thoughts on where to look for further information? (Our UNIX guy is gone for 2 weeks and I want this up.) I've found an rc.config and hosts file. Are there others invovled?

just sounds to me like you need to open a hole in the firewall to allow pings through; or am I missing the point?
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :)

It would be very foolhardy to have a non-Unix literate person configure and implement a Unix based firewall. I recommend that you perform the following exercise:
locate the ON/OFF switch for the DEC.
Push it repeatedly until the DEC is OFF.
Wait for the UNIX guy to return.

What have you already installed? All? Or only the basics? Is the firewall set up?

Depending on that there are several possibilities:
e.g.
- the nic driver
- ip-adress, netmask
- routing, default gateway
- firewall rules
- masquerading

As darkstar has said, it's not that easy to set up a firewall on a UNIX machine for a untrained person.

I have to agree with darkstar - no offense
Unix is like marmite.
You either love it or dispize it.
know it or know nothing of it.
ETC.
Mr UNIX will probably cry if he finds out you killed his best friend, and never forgive you!
I must join in the chorus.
If you do not know what you are doing you may be without the machine for more than two weeks.
