Up until yesterday my Windows 2000 professional computer was attached to a lan comprising of 3 other windows 98/ME pcs using a hub, and a linux box connected to a cable modem acting as gateway.

I have moved to a different location and am trying to connect to my friends network. He has 3 Windows ME pcs hubbed together, with one windows 98se machine connecting to the net via usb adsl.

I can ping 127.0.0.1 from my pc, but cant ping any other pc on the lan. I have tested the network cable (its fine) and tested the hub socket too. The Windows 98se uses nat32 to implement connection sharing.

Im sure that i should be able to ping the other pcs no matter what. I have tried setting up a static ip, using the same subnet mask as the other pcs on the network. The gateway is meant to be 192.168.0.100.

Is there some special action required to make this operating system spring into action? My friend had the same problem a while ago, it was sorted out by installing ICS on the gateway pc rather than nat32.

You are tyring across a cable modem correct? WHat was the IP sceme the provider gave you? WHat about his? Can you ping that #? James Collins

My pc is attached to a hub, which is attached to the other pcs. One of the PCs has a cable modem connected to it via usb, which is shared using nat32 across the whole network.

I cant ping any pcs tho. 127.0.0.1 works fine, but i cant ping any pcs. i cant ping the gateway, cant ping my mates pc, cant ping anything. Every setting in Windows 2000 assumes that once the NIC is plugged in and turned on, you can ping something, but i cant. Its strange because I had no problem using this pc and NIC at my network at home. It all just plugged in and pinged fine.

When Windows 2000 boots, it automatically configures the network connections. Something in that boot is reacting to something on the network and is stopping Windows from receiving any ping responses. I think. Maybe.

I just need to get it to stop DHCP or whatever its doing and get it to let me ping SOMETHING. Without being able to ping anything, its completely useless to me.

What is the IP address of EACH PC? James Collins
