Evening, i've always had a network of 192.168.1.xx but i decided to create a new network on 192.168.10.xx but i can't seem to ping the gateway which is used by the other one Gateway 192.168.1.1 (255.255.255.0) i thought setting the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 would allow the network to talk to anything in 192.168.xx.xx but i must have been mistaken, could someone please enlighten me is its a DNS/subnet issue??

Windows 2003 servers 192.168.1.50 | 192.168.10.10
IPCop 192.168.1.1

Thanks

Mike

Have you configured both sides with 255.255.0.0 masks?

Is this new network on the same switches as the old one?

Mike have you ensured that the IPCop also has a /16 subnet? If not then you're not going to get responses back from that.

Also worth having a look at the results of a Route Print from the command prompt.

As it stands tho I think that whilst you have created the two networks you haven't made the changes on the actual gateway box.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

192.168.1.0/16 and 192.168.10.0/16 would be on the same subnet, thus need the SAME GW and not go through any router/layer 3 device (switched at L2 only)...

Burt, he mentions in the first post that the gateway device is using a /24 subnet, if he hasn't changed that then he is going to have issues.

thanks guys i will check this in a mo when i get a chance, i haven't looked at the ipcop config, i thought that it would be able to see everything tho i think, it only does the routing as i have a DC with DHCP which takes care of the addressing, but i guess the config for the green zone will need to be modified so it can see both subnets?
