Hi all, i'm having trouble pinging an IP address accross our router i can ping 172.16.136.126 but i can't ping 172.16.136.125. 255.255.255.128

If i move to the other subnet then i can ping this machine no problem

My PC is on 10.4.117.131 - 255.255.252.0 Gateway 10.4.116.1

I'm not sure how my router can be incorrectly configured so i can't ping this one address.

Can anyone help from this amount of info.

Thanks.

In most cases where you can ping locally to an address but not off-net, the node you cannot ping off-net has either: a) mis-configured subnet mask or b) a mis-configured default gateway.

If your mask is 11111111.11111111.11111111.10000000 (255.255.255.128), the host addresses on that subnet are 10000001 - 11111110 (129 - 254, with 255 as broadcast). This might be the reason why you cannot reach 125.

Actually, I apologize. I shouldn't post before having my morning coffee. The 125 address is, of course, completely valid on the 172.16.136.0 network.

Can you post any details about your router's configuration that might help identify the problem?

I'm afraid i didn't configure the router.

I'll find out if i can ping 124 to see if it's a range of IP's or just this one.

Thanks.

With this subnet mask, your full IP range for this subnet is:
172.16.136.0 - 172.16.136.127
Your allocatable range is 172.16.136.1 - 172.16.136.126
(remember, the .0 and .127 will be reserved addresses).

You say that you can ping the machine from within the subnet: check that the machine you're pinging from is correctly configured.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please tell us if our suggestion has helped[/li][li]need some help? faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

I've solved the problem now one of our engineers had altered (incorrectly) the config of the switch.

People will fiddle :-(

Thanks.
