Cant open .rtf attachments in outlook 2002

Hello,

A user on our network is having trouble opening a .rtf word attachment in Outlook. When they double click the attachment they get the following message.

!Can't create file: Company Sheet.rtf. Right-click the folder you want to create this file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.

Checked all permissions for the relevant folders inc. olka temp folder. I re-installed office xp and that seemed to cure it, however this morning it's started doing it again.

Any ideas???

I have the same problem with an Excel file attachment in Outlook XP. There is an article on Microsoft's knowledge base #170798 Can't save file attachment with long file name. (It Mention's Outlook 97) In this article they recommend deleting the Temporary Internet files. That solved it for a day, but the next day that solution did not work.

In my users configuation we have both Office XP SBE (Excell, Outlook and Word) and Office 97's(Access and Powerpoint.)

When I shorten the file name it works, but I'm not satisfied with that solution. I suspect there is a file that came off the Office 97 CD that deals with the long file name limitation factor. Uninstalling Office 97 did not resolve it. Installing Office XP SP 3 did not solve it. I still belive there is some dll file hanging around. Or a windows patch that broke it.

If you have figured this out, please let me know. If not I hope this might point you in the right direction.

Lennin, What is the default file location where the user's e-mail attachments save? When you say that the user has "all permissions", exactly what permissions does she have? With some files like Excel, and others, you need both modify and delete access because the program creates and then deletes temp files.

My user has full control of everything. I tried the permissions avenue also.

I ended up deleting all files in the folder identified by the OutlookSecureTempFolder which is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security



This could be different for each client so you will need to look at the value that is there.
