My file won't open - screen just flashes as the process starts and then nothing - no error messages. Is there a way to open by-passing some of the things that may prevent opening? The workbook contains a macro but not event driven.

Excel 2000, Windows 2000 professional

tina20,
start
settings
control panel
admin tools
event viewer
you can also try to hold down the shift key while opening.

Hi longhair,

The event viewer shows:

* The Event log service was started.
* Microsoft (R) Windows 2000 (R) 5.0 2195 Service Pack 4 Uniprocessor Free.
* The Event log service is stop

I try to hold down the shift key while opening the file; it also doesn't open

tina20,
what about under the application tab? sounds like you were only in the system tab.
have you been able to open previously?

regards,
longhair

Application log shows:
* Application [Wuser32.exe]. The application was started while the service manager was locked and NtLmSsp wasn't running. If the application will try to remote via WinSock Proxy it can cause a deadlock with the service manager. For this reason the remoting is disabled. If the application is a service, and you want it to be able to remote, make it dependent on NtLmSsp.

tina20,
seems really odd. you have never been able to open it & you know there is a macro in it. should you open it?

Hi, Tina.

Go to Windows Explorer
Then Tools, Folder Options
Select File Types tab
Find XLS extension
Click on Advanced button
Choose Open. Click on Edit button
Make sure Use DDE is checked and that DDE Message box reads [open("%1")]

Hi xlhelp,
It shows exactly what you said.
I just have problem on one file only. I can open other excel files without any problem.

tina20,
the file may be corrupt. can you get another copy of it?
regards,
longhair

Try opening it in OpenOffice. Free download, opens a lot of corrupted Excel files.

Cheers,
Dave

Probably the only Test Analyst Manager on Tek-Tips...therefore whatever it was that went wrong, I'm to blame...
