We're using outlook 2000, and I have a system that won't open attachments. The user gets an error that says there is no program associated with the file. But we get the error on every attachment, no matter what format it is in. I can right click and save the file, but she needs to be able to open them from her e-mail messages.

What is the 3-letter extension of the attachments you're trying to open?

it doesn't seem to matter. Some are doc some are xls. I can't seem to open any attachment on that system. Mooo... :)

Can you open the attachments (after saving the file) by double clicking it?

Can you open any .doc's .xls's etc. outside of mail by double clicking them?

Can you right click the attachment and pick "quick view"?

yes, yes and no. I can save them to a file and then open them. I can open all the other files. .doc, .xls, whatever. But I cannot open any of them from inside of Outlook. Mooo... :)

Try these 2 articles:

Availability of Microsoft Office Document Open Confirmation Tool (Q238918)

Summary: Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office Document Open Confirmation Tool. This tool can be used to help protect you by always requiring confirmation before opening any of the following Microsoft Office document types in Internet Explorer

Office Documents Open in Internet Explorer (Q162059)

Summary: When you click a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) link to a Microsoft Office file (such as a Microsoft Excel document), Internet Explorer may open the file in Internet Explorer, instead of opening the file in the appropriate Office program.

I don't have a problem with ie. I have a problem with Outlook. These articles do not address my problem. Thanks for trying though. Mooo... :)

What you need to do is right click on the attachment that you received in the email. Press copy and then paste it on your desktop. Double click on the file that you just placed on your desktop and it will open.

I had a similar problem before. this problem was resolved by going into IE Options (I realise you said the problem was not with this) select the ADVANCED tab and RESTORE DEFAULTS. The problem was solved, but then only temporarily. I'm not sure how you go about recreating profiles within your company, but in the end this was the final resolution.

Thanks Dollar, re-creating the profile was going to be my next step. I guess it is the only other thing I can do. I appreciate your input.

To idassow; I know how to save attachments, I need to be able to open them directly from Outlook. Thanks though. Mooo... :)

I know it's been a long time but I just came across this while searching for something else. Roaming profiles will cause this to happen. Would need to recreate roaming profile.
