I cannot open any files (jpeg, psd...nothing) in Photoshop. When I attempt to open a fie, nothing happens. I thought it may be hidden, but when I go to Window, the file is not listed. (Also my Open Recent option is dim - and I accessed so many files recently.)

Thank you!

Just wanted to clarify my previous post.

I can't start a new file either. Nothing happens when I select File | New.

I already deleted my preferences folder. No change.

In fact, even before I did that, and this was the first indciation of a problem, when I launched Photoshop I got this "startup screen" which I had disabled a long time ago, and it asked me if I wish to customize my color settings, which I already had done ages ago. So it seems like my preferences had been reset - but certainly not by me. And since then I can't open any existing files or start new ones. Please help! Thank you!

Hello. do yourself a favour anddisable your lan. disconnect all lan activity, and it it works, then you know its the AdobeLM cleanup file in the background proces that is screwing you around. Also .. press <ctrl> + <alt> + <del> .. (assuming you've got XP OS), and under procces's .. disable Adobe bridge.

Should this not work .. re-install.

Enjoy! :)

or try resetting your prefs to their factory settings, see my post on thread229-1025611

I have deleted the preferences again and again. Using ctrl+alt+shift, as well as manually deleting the folder. Same thing! It is NOT a preferences issue.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop! Same thing! Can't open or start any files. Please help!

Is your copy of PS activated with Adobe?

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Could this have anything to do with permissions?
Can you open the files with other programs like MSWord or anything else?

Do you have any memory problems that you know of?

jmgalvin - Yes, it is a licensed Photoshop copy. Have been using it for over a year now.

mscallisto -I can open all other files. Not a permissions issue at all. Able to access these same files via another computer, same username. Was able to open these files just the day before. No memory problems either.

I recently installed Symantec Antivirus. Then this started happening. Can they be related?

Try removing Symantec Antivirus and see if the problem goes away or visit adobe.com support and search for Symantec Antivirus posts, you may find something there.

The antivirus can be a BIG problem. Make sure that all antivirtus saftware is disabled whan installing any legitimate software (from a known company).

Antivirus can interfere with installs - mistakenly identifying something as a no-no. This used to be a real big problem with Illustrator.

On Activation, I didn't mean licensed. Since you reinstalled, you may have to reactivate. I don't know where photoshop stores its activation info so I don't know if, in the attempts at repair the activation info might have gotten wiped.

I disconnected computer from the network. No difference.

Strange thing though. In ImageReady I am able to open the file, and then jump to Photoshop to view it. But I still cannot open or start any files in Photoshop, and I cannot imagine what I'm supposed to do next!! Somebody, please help!

ok ..you see, proces of ilimination is good. if you can get into PS, go and dissable the Adobe bridge.

the thing is, Adobe Bridge tries to alocate all pics into a databse, and access them realtime. This, is rather annoying sometimes .. and Nortons doesnt help either, thinking the program is some sort of threat.

Also, go into your windows firewall, and give permissions to ALM and Adobe bridge .. (under the add program).

next, try and creat a new doc.. 1024x768, and then <prntScrn> .. and then pressing <ctrl>+v to paste it into a new layer. If this works, then the rasteration and pixle graphs are fine, and a program error is eminent.

let me know.

Design1, I think you may have been right about AdobeBridge. I just got one of those Updates Available popup messages from Adobe - one of the available updates was AdobeBridge. I ran the installation and restarted Photoshop and now everything works fine! So thanks to everyone for all their help!
