Can't lookup hostnames on the Internet

Hi all

I am looking after a Windows 2000 network, servers are running W2K server and PC's W2K professional. We have a Netgear DG814 router, connected via ADSL to the Internet. One server is set up to be PDC and a fileserver, the other is a proxy and email server.

The problem is that I can't see any locations on the Internet. It will work for a while (presumably until the PC's refresh thier DNS data, but until that time you can't browse the network (I have added information to the hosts file to get round that issue). It makes no difference weather the PC is set to browse directly or via the proxy server.

DNS is running on the PDC, but I don't seem to be able to turn it off, or make it pass lookups on to another DNS server. Either would do. I have set up our ISPs DNS servers in DNS under a zone for our ISP and included the DNS servers in our zone.

Pinging from the command line will get to an IP address, and any host listed in our DNS server, but not to any other host. NSLookup will return valid data for external domains.

Sorry if I haven't given you the most useful information, but I'm a programmer not a networking expert!!! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Follow the following faq to set up your DNS. faq96-3017

Since you have set up a PDC that means you are using AD (Active Directory). You need a valid DNS server to use AD. So you don't want to disable the DNS server.
