Have just changed over a client to a new forest/domain. They were previously a part of a parent company and have divested. Two win98 systems are unable to validate their username against the win2k domain. One is on the local net, the other on a subnet. The local user can access network resources and the network and windows logon names are configured to be the same. The remote user just gets a message that the username can not be validated.

Both users have been logged on using other systems (XP and win2k pro) to export/import mail to an exchange server. However, their personal systems are win98. We're now trying to log them on and can't. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We're on a really tight deadline to complete this conversion. Thanks. Diane

This explains how to access a Win 2000 domain using 98. By saying remote user are you referring to a different location or is this user trying to log in using terminal services? A subnet can be on the same network and log into the same domain controller. A domain is full of different subnets. If you only used on subnet then you would be limited to how many users you could have.

Windows 95/98-based Active Directory client extension is distributed on the Windows 2000 CD.

Thanks very much. Is the AD client required to enable win98 logons (yes it is a remote subnet)? The reason I ask is we also have local systems that do not receive logon errors. Two questions...why would they not receive logon errors and are they really authenticating without the AD client? Is there a difference between a subnet member versus the local net? Are there any other alternatives, purely asking for timing considerations. This is a crash project and the site is a 4 hour plane ride away.

Thanks again,
Diane
