Ok...weird thing happened.
Laptop with Windows 2k. The laptop was previously part of another workgroup or domain. I proceeded to change the Workgroup name and the Computer name to network to 2 other local PC's (no domain). Afterwards, MS says it needs to reboot so changes can take effect. I reboot, but now the password for the user no longer works.
There is no Administrator account (although this user account has Administrator rights) and the guest account is disabled.
I attempted to boot into Safe Mode and also restore to "Last Known Good" but to no avail.
Does anyone have any clues to help me out of this jam???

thanks in advance...

Tony,

Thanks for the reply, but your link is not related to my problem. I'm not having a problem connecting to a network share.....I can NOT login to the PC!!

Why is there no Administrator account?

When you "disjoined" from the previous workgroup/domain (my guess is domain), then the user associated with that domain can no longer log in (as you've discovered), since in a workgroup you have to have a local user setup. That's where the Administrator account comes into play.

You'll have to read the FAQ on how to hack the Administrator account to reset the password for it.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Thanks Lander for the reply.

I assume the Administrator account was renamed to the users login account since you cant remove the admin account.

I assumed it was a workgroup since there was no "domain" field underneath the password field in the Log In screen. I would have been able to choose between the Domain and the Local Machine right??
Also, when changing the workgroup/domain name, I never received any notice/message that I was "disjoining" from a domain before rebboting. In the past, I have always gotten a message "warning" that I was about to remove/disjoin the user/computer from the domain...so I assumed that it was in a workgroup.
None-the-less I will also try looking in the FAQ's for Admin pw hacks....thanks
