Can't log on!!

I am new to Linux/redhat/apache etc. I am trying very hard but in doing so i seem to have messed up completley and i can't log on at all. I am booting to x-desktop and i cant even log on as root. I was messing about with authentication prior to rebooting TRYING to get other pcs on my lan to browse my redhat server using internet explorer and i think i must have locked myself out somehow. If i try and log on as root or the user i had created i just get a red cross and "Auhentication failed"

Is there anyway i can get myself out of this mess without a complete reinstall?

Thanks for that Ian, i tried it but unfortunatley i am still getting authentication failed when i try to log on. I think i have messed up when i was trying to change authentication so that others could access my redhat machine,

ANy more ideas i could try?
