Try to find a solution in these pages, but can't seem to find one. I'm having huge problems with this XP pro laptop and trying to log it on a windows 2000 domain. All other computers in the network are WIN 2000 computers and work fine when logging on to the domain.

I have written the correct domain name and used administrator to log on but to no avail.

We have just the one win 2000 server and the DHCP goes through the internet router (if that is any help)

thanks

We're going to need some more information before an appropriate answer can be given.

Are you certain the Laptop has network connectivity? Cables been switched? Different jack/port on switch? Is the IP address static or assigned by DHCP? Can you ping anyother workstations or servers on the network? Is Windows Firewall or another Firewall installed on the XP Laptop? Can you connect if they are disabled? What troubleshooting steps have been tried to date?

That should be a start.

The laptop is getting it's ip-address from a router which gives us Internet connection (DHCP).

I can also find the server using the domain name as workgroup name on this laptop, but even though the username and password is correct I cannot access a shared folder (this folder is on the server) which I have given the user access to via AD on the server.

The Windows firewall has been disabled.

I forget to say that the laptop is connected to the network via a wireless network card. If that is any help.

Just tried two troubleshooting steps, It seems you can't join a domain if you already have logged on using the workgroup and a user which is in the AD. I made a new user and tried to join the domain, but it comes up with a error message that said something like: the server cannot execute the command.

I also tried to connect the laptop with a network cable, that didn't help either

1st I would get it up and running with the cable and after that the wireless will take care of itself.

if dhcp is enabled thats fine , you need to enter the DNS settings and the gateway address and make sure you have the domain name correct. that should get you going. then just go wireless.

I would suggest also that, on your XP laptop, you make the IP address of the Win2000 domain controller your primary DNS entry.
