Cant log into secure sites

My client has a computer that wont log into any secure sites or anything that comes up with a password. It is running IE 6 and WIN XP home. THe pages refuse to come up or if the the login pages does come up it, once you enter you password it tries for a while and then that page comes up to say check your network settings.
Ive tried all the obvious things but had no success

ringring, ringring, ringring, ringring, ringring, ringring, ringring, .....nobody home.

Has your client checked the date and time yet as mentioned in your other post thread779-536583 ?

I tried reformatting and reinstalling and it works ok for about a week and then it stops working again
