I'm having trouble joining the domain. I went into Identification Changes and in " member of " I placed a domain name I wanted to join.

The error message is:

The following error occurred validating the main" (domain name.com). The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I can ping the server so what am I missing?

are you using subnets?? the routing obvioulsy works but domain resoultion doesnt, If you are on a different subnet or any routing is used then try this:-

in your lmhosts (C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc>) file enter the following

192.168.10.93 myservername #PRE #DOM:mytestdomain

Thanks David, but I'm on the same subnet. I changed the DNS address and it got me closer but I get a new error message that reads "access denied" any suggestions.

Well, you got the DNS working, that's the first issue. To double check you DNS config, run the tools that are on the Windows 2000 server cd. They can help you troubleshoot DNS and PDC issues.

The access denied error is usually from not using a Domain account that has permission to join the Domian. When prompted for the user name and password, you should specify an Administrator account and it should then allow you to join the Domain.

Are you trying to join an NT4 domain, if so make sure you have specified the ip address of the WINS server

I had sort of the same problem when I upgraded my servers from nt4.0 to 2k but I was also changing domains. I ended up having to add each computer name manually on the server side and then going to each computer and then joining it to the domain.

On your system logs, check and make sure that the domain controller is the primary browser. I had problems with several w2k machines, and I realized that computer browsing was turned on, and the w2k machines thought the other w2k machines were the master browser. Turn off browsing on the w2k machines. Clear your event log, and try again. Glen A. Johnson
