Can't install most apps

I keep getting an error while trying to install games and apps from CD (original CD, not warez). It will get to the point of where you want the program to be installed etc and then go to where you can see the progress. It stays at 0% forever and I hve to "end task" to get back to windows. After the install program is closed, a small error window pops up saying "Remote Procedure Call Error". As stated, it doesn't do it on all apps/games but most.

AMD XP1800 CPU
512MB PC2100 DDR Ram
Epox EP-8K7A+ Mobo (AMD 760 chipset)
WinXP Pro
Plextor 12x10x40 CDRW
Visiontek GF3 Video
SB Live Platinum Sound

Sorry for asking kind of a dumb question but.... you have double checked the permissions on the folder you are attempting to install to? As well as the temp folder?

How about the user permissions? Are you logged in as Admin or with Admin rights?

Thanks, after work I will check the permissions, but I do log in as administrator and do need to ensure that the folders are not read only for some reason.
