Can't insert into a report 1

I have been creating reports with Crystal Reports in some for for several years and i am flummaxed. i go to fire up Crystal 7. which i use and have had no problems with.
I go to use the wizard to build a shell of the report i want. no problem. get through it comes up with the report in design mode.. i can run it, move stuff around, i can insert a summary item, I can't however insert anything from the insert menu. Have I had a total brain fart? what am i missing? I can open the insert menu, select, for instance, a text object, it grabs it, and the box follows my mouse around as if it was going to insert. but anywhere i put it it has the little circle with a slash, can't put it there, i can pick up other objects and move them, no problem I know this is something simple and stupid but this is silly....

Sounds very odd to me, I'm unfamiliar with that scenario.

Have you tried using a blank report instead of the wizard?

I'm not so certain that this is simple and stupid, sounds very ominous to me.

Can you select another object, hit Ctrl-C and Ctrl V and paste it?

Did this only happen once, or several times? I'd reboot and try again.

As a last step, I'd try reinstalling Crystal, or restoring the system to a previously known good state.

Also, can you 'drag-and-drop' a field from the drop-down
list of Database objects in the explorer?

OH MY GOSH

I am running a dual monitor setup. If i had the report on the secondary monitor CR did not think that that the cursor was on the report and so had the little ... can't put that here... icon..

i moved the report to the other monitor.... no problem.

wow.. that was weird.
