I am using the ALS book form Microsoft.
Windows 2000 Server. It came w/120 day server license.

i have tried to setup win 2000 server, as a stand alone,on a pc.
more than enough mem, etc.

I get all the way through the setup but when i try to join the domain it keeps saying no such domain. if i ping wwtc01(server name) it finds it but comes back w/127.0.01 which can't be used. it does the same for if i try 10.1.1.10 it wil say no reply.

I have it set this way:
ip 10.1.1.10
sub 255.0.0.0
dns 10.1.1.10

I have forward and backward lookup setup.

i need this to work for a class that i am teaching this summer. all students will be using the same software.

can anyone help?

i am so frustrated. if possible could you go step bey step.
maybe i have missed something.

It is just a new server and i am trying to connect to the new domain

I don't think you answered cmegha's question though. If anything you raise more confusion.

You say you are installing 2K as a stand alone server, but you are trying to join it to a domain. How are you joining it to a domain? Are you running dcpromo.exe? Or are you going to the Network identification and specifying a domain to join. In any event, neither will result in a "stand alone server".

In looking at your original post, your server name is not a domain. Back to cmegha's original question, is there a domain already existing to which you want to join?

Please clarify.

If you are promoting this to a DC and you have it as a stand alone (I am assuming this means you don't have any ethernet connected)

you will never be able to promote it.

You need to at least have the NIC connected to a hub or loopback before promoting or it will fail.

stand alone doesnt mean theres no network connection, I believe it means there are no services which this server relies on. read what hewissa has to say

Wow what great replies.

By stand alone I mean it is not connected to any network.

So if I connect it to a hub, i will be able to get it to join a the domain?

Is this why, when i ping wwtc01(server) i get an ip address of 127.0.0.1?

127.0.0.1 is considered the loopback reply. Its like saying hello to yourself. You are asking the server if it is there and it replies "yes".

Sounds like there is no other domain. So do this (this is appreviated, just follow the prompts):

Install windows 2k on the server.
Once installed, click start>run>dcpromo.exe
You want to install a new controller for a new domain/forest.
Specify a domain name, other than the computer name.
Install DNS.
The Domain is done. Now other computers can join your domain, and other servers, when running dcpromo can also join your newly created domain.

I have tried running dcpromo and always had an error that said no domain listed. configure dns or find correct domain.

thanks for your patience:)

Are you specifying a new domain or a member of an exsisting domain. You must install DNS either during the dcpromo process or prior to it. There is no other Domain Controller and therefore no DNS (you haven't specified otherwise). This is the 1st Domain controller in your domain so you need to install AD under this premiss.

You need to state what exactly you are doing, step by step so we can see why the error occurs. How many computers/servers are there. Is there a network. Is there another domain....

It helps us to get the whole picture.

You must connect your server to a hub/switch or use a loopback plug. Basically without doing this process your network is disabled so your server will not know whether he's alone or let's put it this way, if your network is disabled you can't dcpromo.

Sorry my suggestion was already stated by supatech.

To elaborate further, during DCPROMO server will try to contact an existing DNS or DOMAIN but it will encounter a network timeout because its request got no reply, so it will give you an error. It can't decide what to do next so it will stop with the error coz it can decide whether, "Am I alone or not"?

Wow, you are all great!

Okay here is wha I am attempting to do.

I have a pc not connected to any hub or network.

Am trying to make it a win2k server (PDC) as it will be the Primary one on my classroom network after I am done.

I will name the server wwtc01 (western wisconsin tech college 01)

I thought to keep it easy for the students I would create a domain and call it wwtcrm209.local (wwtc room 209 classroom .local as it doesn't go anywhere but inside the classroom)

netbios name wwtcrm209

ip that i would like to 192.168.0.2 for the server
sub of 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1 (again just to keep simple)

Using a class c address the students will be able to subnet w/o alot of different options for right now.

Okay, so far?

Well using MS books, it never says one thing about nulling out the nic or hooking it up to a hub. I have rebuilt servers (dell. compaq, tangent, ibm- all w/multiple hd's) and never had this much trouble.

Now i fdisked the hard drive, run the 2000 setup and getthat it was successful. i set up my nic w/the proper ip settings and run dcpromo. It will say i need to setupdns first and i do w/the above nomeclatures. Then ad runs and it says it can't find the requested domain.

i ping wwtc01 and get a good reply but that it was at 127.0.0.1
i ping wwtcrm209.local and get a good reply but that it was at 127.0.0.1
i ping theip address if the nic and get a request timed out.

Please help!!!!!

I need to disagree with ricpinto on this one. A server doesn't need to be connected to a hub/switch. You are correct in saying that during the DCPROMO process the server will try to find an existing DNS server, however, when one is not detected it will prompt to install one itself.

122455,
Before running dcpromo, ping the nic. Whats the response?

If i ping 192.168.0.1 (the nic address) i get a time out.

If i ping 127.0.0.1 i get 4 lines of good reply.

There has tobe a way to setup this server w/o a hub.

i don't think MS would have schools doing w/o a hub if it isn't possible.

There has to be a "LIVE" network connection or "LOOPBACK" on the nic before using dcpromo... a "CREATE" a new domain AD just hook the nic to a empty hub with no other connections.

And as for your question "i don't think MS would have schools doing w/o a hub if it isn't possible. "

Response: Why would you need a domain controller with no network connection?

Don't you need one along w/DNS in order to get AD installed.

No where in the book does it mention that you need to have a hub, null cable or network in order to set the server.

It is not that fact that the server needs to be connected to a hub/switch, what needs to occur is wether the nic is activated. Assigning an ip/mask/gateway will not initialize the nic. Take a look at the back, where the nic is, are there lights on? If not the nic is not active. And the dcpromo process looks for an active nic, without one the error is made.

You don't need a loopback plug or the nic set to loopback, but you do need to install the MS loopback adapter. Open the hardware wizard and select the Microsoft > MS Loopback Adapter.

Configure the server on the loopback adapter and run dcpromo again.

As with everything to do with Active Directory, you must get you DNS server running perfectly. Ensure the service is running and then test it.

Make sure the your local machine, (192.168.0.2) is set as the only DNS server for the NIC. I have to agree with hewissa, the NIC must be active. The reason people have mentioned connecting it to a hub is that that is the easiest way to make it active.

You say you get the error 'can't find the requested domain'. Why is it looking for a domain, you should be creating a new one!

The best advice I can give when working with any aspect of an Active Directory network is get DNS functioning perfectly.

You should ignore the 127.0.0.1 address too. That will confuse things
