Hello,

Server 2003.

I have a virus/adwear infection. I scanned with Ad-awear removed what it found and rebooted. I now can't get past the Log ON screen. I put in my password click OK it goes for a while and then it logs me off to the Log On screen again.

I tried to log in with Safe Mode and the same thing happens. I can't get to the command prompt either.
I think the registry got screwed up.

I have a copy of the registry on the Desktop but I can't get to it.

I tried to do a repair but setup can't find the hard drive.

Thanks for any help. Tom

if this is a single drive setup, try pulling the drive and slaving it on to another PC to get to the desktop files and get that Reg file back. Otherwise, it sound like you need a fresh rebuild and better back up strategies. :)

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the help.

2003 is on a Serial ATA drive so I can't take it out and slave it to another computers hard drive. I can use IDE hard drives on this computer so I connected one and loaded XP on it. I can now access all the files on the ATA drive and I found the Registry backup file.

How do I restore the Registry on the ATA drive from the XP OS?

Thanks

Try booting with a Windows recovery CD like BartPE, UBCD4WIN, Knoppix.
Also it's quite possible that you experiencing some disk corruption, since this behaviour is common on failing disks. You might want to also run a CHKDSK from the recover console.

Hello all,

Thank you for all the help. I'm not going to try to save this Server 2003 any more. I just loaded it to learn the OS anyway.

The 2003 OS is on two Sata drives set up using Raid.
I transfered all my important files from on of the SATA drives to the IDE drive with the XP OS on it. My Computer sees all the drives I have connected. The drive in question is labeled F. I want to just use it as a back up drive so I'd like to wipe off the old OS, Win 2003.

I'm going to save the other copy just in case I want to work on it some time.

Using XP's Disk Management can I just reformat the drive F and after formating will XP still see it as F and then can I drop new files to it?

Thanks again. Tom

Update,

I could not delete the partition from the hard drive using Disk Management. It won't delete files that are from an Operating System, Windows 2003.

So I took an old Windows startup disk and used Fdisk to delete the Partition. Then I used Disk Management to format the drive.

I now have a storage drive to use for backup.
