Here is a very annoying problem.. Im trying to get a friend's computer to connect to the internet through a network.. It is a dell laptop with Windows XP Home on it. I brought the laptop home and proceeded to try and connect it to the internet through my network. When I hooked the ethernet cable into the port and typed in ipconfig, I got an IP address and a subnet mask, but no gateway or connection-specific DNS suffix.. So I couldn't connect to the internet.. I'm at work now and tried connecting to the internet through our network but the same thing happens. (I have easilly done this before on my Windows 2000 Pro laptop by just plugging the cord in my NIC card and opening IE) I cannot do an ipconfig /release or ipconfig /renew for some reason.. Here is some information / things I have tried:

Installed:

Client for Networks
File and Printer Sharing
QoS Packed Scheduler
NWLink NetBIOS
NWLink IPX/SPX
TCP/IP

What I have tried:

I have uninstalled the adapter, rebooted, reinstalled adapter.. still same thing

I want to uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP, but for some reason, I cannot uninstall in the properties tab. When I select the TCP/IP section, uninstall button fades so I cant click on it..

Thanks for all help!

Could be bad net card. What happens when you manually enter the IP settings?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I alrady tried to enter it in statically, but it still didn't work.. Something I also just found odd, when I right click on my computer and select computer name, there is no option for me to change my network id... This is really odd.... I'm starting to think it may be a bad network card, but the computer is not that old.. Im wondering how it could go bad so quickly...

Sometimes parts are DOA from the manufacturer.

Do you have a PCMCIA or USB net card to try?

Unfortunately, I don't.. She didn't give it to me. So since this probably is defective, obviously it is recommended to return the laptop to dell to have it replaced as long as it's under warranty?

Great FAQ bcaster

I've gotta give some of that a try.
