I have a Dell with XP at my house that I got from an office that used a T1 line in it so I had to add a dial up modem. I was able to login to my ISP but cant get any web pages to come up. My IE6 Browser keeps saying "Page not found" and "Can not find server".

I made sure the proxy box was not checked in my Network settings. I can not ping my ISP DNS server but I can log in to my ISP. Please advise how I can correct my problem.

I agree try the above, but then you would have to have access to the internet.....

do you have a static IP or Dynamic? If its static maybe the maybe your ISP made some DNS changes.

I had the same problem. Turned out my virsus scan was running live update in the background causing the same problem. Live update was running even though an
internet connection was not established.
Anything similar this could cause this type of problem.

I do have Symantec Live update running. How did you solve your problem? Do I need to eliminate Symantec Live update, if so how?

Also to use the System File Checker tool do I need the XP CD or can I get it off the Dell CD that came with my Computer?

Running SFC it should check your system using the Source Path that was available and used when XP was installed.

It should at the moment be pointing to your Dell CD. So just type SFC /ScanNow in the Start Run Box and have your CD ready. After running SFC any results will appear in the Event Viewer (System) under a "Windows File Protection" line

These may be of help.

Change the source file path
thread779-362427

Check This Registry location.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Have a look at the Value for SourcePath and see what it says.

I uninstalled Live Update. The uninstall utility may give
an error message not allowing the uninstall. I had to manualy delete files in the Symantec Live update folder,
reboot then finish the uninstall. This may be a problem
with Nortons newer version. I never had similar problems
with previous versions.
