I'm trying to fix someone's computer for them. They have a dial-up connection. They say that they can get a connection but cannot view any web pages. However, I can't get it to dial their ISP at all. I have a wireless connection here at my home and I have connected to that with their pc. It shows the signal strength is excellent however it says limited or no connectivity. I cannot access the internet at all on their computer. Can someone help me fix this for them?

OS-Windows XP Home
Dial-Up ISP
No Firewall running (another error message there)
Expired antivirus/security software (don't even get me going on that!)

Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

that means that you were not provided an ip address by the isp server.

SOMETHING IS BLOCKING IT!

that expired antivirus is blocking access to the internet get rid of it!

let me know what happens when you remove it
some AV'S block access when they are expired such as norton

good luck!

It didn't work. I removed Norton and it still cannot access a web page. Any ideas? I'm getting desperate now.

ok go to internet options and click on the connection tab. select automatically detect settings.

tell me what happens when you do that.

one thing have you tried to connect via dial-up ?
does it connect?
i can help you with tcp/ip issues but we need to get you connected right now and it doesn't seem like the computer is configured properly to use your wireless connection.

lets do this

connect via dial-up

then i want you to do a ping test.

click start then run, type "cmd" (no quotes)

when your at the command prompt,
type; "ping and see if it says cannot find host.

then type; ping 206.239.115.141

and see how many packets are recieved and let me know.

also when it say's limited or no connectivity that means at that point your not connected. please keep that in mind.

For the wireless connection, it just sounds like the IP properties are not set up correctly, make sure that TCP/IP properties on the PC are set to get details automatically.

(My Computer > Network Connections > right click on appropriate connection, properties, then select TCP/IP properties, make sure there is not a static entry.)

The connection should then come up, if not, go to a command prompt and type 'ipconfig /renew'

For the dial up - you say you cannot connect.

At which point does the conenction fail? Does the modem have a dial tone? Does it dial? Does it authenticate?

Bear in mind that if you get the wireless working this does not automatically solve the dial up issue.

I am able to connect to her dial-up host. She had the wrong phone number set to default. So I solved that problem. I CAN connect via dial-up. But once connected I cannot view any web pages. I've tried the ping a few times before you mentioned it and it can't get through. Pinging by name just doesn't work at all, Pinging by IP address times out and then has 0 packets received. It is checked for automatic settings.

I don't care about the wireless connection as that was just another way I was going to try to test her connection. She doesn't have a wireless connection at her home. I know my network works as I have 4 pc's tied into it with no problems. So the problem lies somewhere within her laptop.

What else should I try? And thank you for taking the time to help me. She really doesn't want to send it out to the box shops because that's how it got messed up in the first place I guess-sent it off to be fixed and it came back like this.

In internet explorer, go to tools, internet options, connections tab.

click LAN settings - make sure there is no proxy info set, if the box is checked, uncheck it.

If that doesnt work, try using a different dial up ISP -there are many free that do not require a subscription.

ok sounds like tcp/ip is corrupted and most likely your winsocks.

do you have the xp cd? JUST INCASE YOU MIGHT NEED IT.

lets do this.

***before editing the registry please back it up***

1)remove winsock keys from registry.

-to do so go to START,RUN,TYPE: REGEDIT then click ok.

delete the following registry keys: WINSOCK &WINSOCK2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\WINSOCK

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\WINSOCK2

****RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

then you will need to reinstall TCP/IP

1)click START then RUN type CMD and then press ENTER.
2)type the following command and press ENTER.

netsh int ip reset log.txt

*a new command prompt will appear*

3) EXIT out of the command prompt.
4) click START then CONTROL PANEL.
5) double click the NETWORK CONNECTIONS icon.

**if you don't see network connections switch to classic view in the control panel window.**

6) right-click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION then click PROPERTIES.
7) on the GENERAL tab click CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS then click UNINSTALL.

8) when prompted to RESTART computer click YES.

9) click START then CONTROL PANEL and then double click NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
10) click YES if you are prompted.
11) on the GENERAL tab click INSTALL.
12) on the SELECT A NETWORK COMPONENT TYPE window, select CLIENT, and then click ADD.
13) in the SELECT NETWORK COMPONENT TYPE window, select CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS and then click OK.

**CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS will be added to the list and you will be taken back to the general tab.**

14)on the GENERAL tab click INSTALL.
15) on the SELECT A NETWORK COMPONENT TYPE window, select PROTOCOL, and then click ADD.

16) click HAVE DISK, then type, "C:\windows\inf" (no quotes)
then click OK.
17) in the next window selectINTERNET PROTOCOL TCP/IP then click ok.

**YOU WILL BE TAKEN BACK TO THE GENERAL TAB,MAKE SURE ALL THE CHECK BOXES ARE CHECKED.**

18) CLICK CLOSE AND RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

THIS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF IT FOR YOU.
IF IT DOESN'T DO A PING TEST AGAIN AND TELL ME YOUR RESULTS
INTERNET EXPLORER COULD BE CORRUPTED.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Well here lies the problem now....she doesn't have the recovery disk nor a copy of XP. Today I tried connecting via my wireless connection again-no luck. Tried connecting directly through my cable connection-no luck.

Oh, and I tried restoring back to the last time I had the laptop when I knew it was working and it says it cannot be restored nor can I activate the antivirus I installed yesterday. I'm thinking there is a virus on there, or was, and did some major corrupting?

Can I try your steps above without the XP cd? Or would you recommend waiting until she can get her hands on a copy of XP?

no with windows xp you rarely will need the cd so go for it and do those steps you shoulb be completely fine. silly of me i always ask if you got the cd. you'll be ok.

let me know what happens or what you get when you do that.

good luck!

Thanks! I'll fire it up now and walk through your steps and keep you posted. Thanks so much for your help.

IT WORKED!! Oh thank you SOOOOO much! She is going to be so happy to hear this. Granted I haven't tried her dial-up connection but I can connect and view pages using my wireless connection so she should be good to go.

I can't thank you enough. I really appreciate all your help:)

Quick question though-what do I tell her happened? What actually became corrupted and do you have a wild guess as to how or why?

if your connected through a wireless that's letting you know that your tcp/ip settings and winsocks and your browser is fine just aslong as you can connect through her dial up you'll be completely fine.

glad to hear it all worked out for you.

I'M SORRY I MISSED YOUR QUESTION THE LAST TIME.

TELL HER THAT THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL PROTOCOL/INTERNET PROTOCOL BECAME CORRUPTED. (TCP/IP) IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENCAPSULATING INFORMATION TURNING INTO PACKETS AND SENDING THAT INFORMATION THROUGHT THE INTERNET AS WELL AS RECIEVING IT.

THSE THINGS EVENTUALLY GET CORRUPTED YOU CAN JUST TELL HERE THAT IT'S BASICALLY PART OF BEING ON THE NET.

TAKE CARE.
