cant get 3d programs to open

Hi, i cant seem to get max or xsi to open on my 2 pcs. xsi for halflife 2 used to open but will not anymore. they always freeze on loading, max6 freezes when mentalray is loading. This happens on both of my pcs. they both have xp pro.

any ideas of what the problem is?

more info. i have a ati radeon 9500pro in one pc and a geforce 4 ti in the other. direct x9.0b
