I have a problem whereby I get many popup ads from what I think to be a trojan horse called Backdoor.VB.9.N. Symantec can't find it though AVG did (as well as some other horses) but I can't seem to get rid of the problem. The popup ads even occur when I set my home page to blank and just start IE.

I've also ran adware and spybot with no problems found.

I even have a nice screen capture of Norton Anti-virus having just completed scanning (showing no infections found) with a dialog box over that window from AVG telling me about a Trojan horse found and to run AVG (which of course I do, but it doesn't find it!!)

Any ideas how to get rid of this problem?? Many thanks in advance!!! :)

Running Windows XP with latest service packs, updates, etc. installed.

Disable System Restore.. Now, boot to Safe Mode and run the scan (should come up clean).. Boot normally and re-enable System Restore.. Should be the end of your problem..

Hmm, not sure if I'm doing this right or not...

I went to system properties and then to the System Restore tab. Then clicked on the check box for "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Is that what you meant for me to do?

Either way, when I do that and restart in safe mode, I can't scan using AVG because the application won't run in safe mode. :(

Any other ideas? These pop-ups are driving me even more insane than I already am!

Thanks in advance!!

No problem.. that's where you wanted to be and do (System Restore).. Run the scan in normal mode then.. Once done, get CWShredder and run it as well..

Murray

Yeah, tried that as well as HijackThis and problem still won't go away. :(

Please tell me I don't have to re-install my OS???!!!! Any other ideas??

Thanks!

Okay, so on a suggestion from a friend, I downloaded and installed Mozilla (which I'm using as I type this) and my problems went away. So it seems the problem is specific to IE. I guess I should try to re-install IE??? What do you think??

Thanks!

Well, that is an option but I would be trying SpyBot first..

Murray

Spybot first... make sure to update defintions before running.

Next, disable Norton Services and head to (use the AutoClean mode)

I've run into viruses in the past that will disable particular portions of NAV and some others, so that they will not be detected.

TrendMicro will run through everything, even network drives is you so desire.

Norton also provides a similar service on their site, but I've found TrendMicro's to be easier & faster.

Recap of problem:

Surfing the web running internet explorer was fine. Than one day, I began getting lots of popup/popunder ads. Even when setting the IE start page to a blank page, the ad problem would begin.

What I tried:

SystemWorks 2003 with latest definitions.
Adaware
AVG 6.0
Panda
Spybot
CWShredder
HijackThis
Stinger

Latest update:

Problem is specific to running Internet Explorer. Running Mozilla now instead and I have no popup/pupunder ad problems. So, it seems that my copy of IE has been trashed by something. I'll try re-installing IE somehow and see if that fixes the problem.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Well, turns out that after simply re-installing Internet Explorer, my problem has gone away. It's funny that after trying all those things to solve the problem, I started using Mozilla as my borwser and now it's my browser of choice! It seems to load pages MUCH faster than ie did and the tabbed browsing is really a nice feature! Hasta La Vista IE!!! LOL

Many thanks to all of you who tried to help.
