Maxtor 40 GB Hard drive 8 MB Buffer

I Had a WD Caviar 80 GB and 20 GB Maxtor and replaced them with the Maxtor 40 GB to try and fix the problem.

For some reason when I try to use windows explorer to access C,D,E drive the flash light comes out showing that the system is looking for the drive? It will find it but can take 5 to 10 minutes?

I have reloaded OS. changed hard drive twice. low level reformatted hard drive who knows how many times. I am getting ready to replace ram? I have no clue? Could it be the ram, the processor, the motherboard. Everything works fine until you want to save something or open a file? HELP!!

If the only thing that has changed is the hard drive, and the computer didn't do this before, I suspect you have a configuration problem, or the drive is bad. Obviously you have reformatted the drive several times, so you might take back the drive and ask for a new one.

Thank you for such a quick response! It did do this before. I changed from the 80 GB and 20 GB hard drive to the 40 GB hard drive to attempt to fix this problem? As far as configuration problem do you mean in the BIOS setup? Would ram cause this? I heard people say that ram causes weird problems?

All I can say is check the ribbon and the jumpers.
I had a similar problem with a drive I hadn't used in a while that was set for cable select (which I never use) on the same ribbon as a master hdd.

You can also try it on it's on a different IDE channel.
