can't download windows xp updates 1

i've got a windows xp laptop that was in my office (first day on the job) and i cannot download windows updates to it. i deleted the temp internet files but still no luck. it appears updates haven't been run in quite some time. if i try to download updates it just times out. any ideas?

What can you discover by looking at the WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows folder, or by looking at the Event Viewer?


See if you can manually download and install this recent update.

A general fix for many Window Updates problems is to log on as an Administrator, Stop and Disable the Automatic Updates Service, Rename the folder in C:/Windows called SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistributionOLD, Rename the C:/ Windows/ WindowsUpdate.log to WindowsUpdateOLD.log. Restart Automatic Updates Service and set it to Automatic, reboot and let Windows recreate new folder (SoftwareDistribution) and WindowsUpdate.log.

If you can download anything then try using this to download your updates.

It downloads them all for the OS that you want and creates an iso for you to burn onto cd. you then run the cd on your new laptop and it will find( pretty much) all the updates needed.

this problem has been driving me nuts for weeks. About time they addressed it. Everyone thought I was crazy that there was something wrong.
