My file server has some files and/or folders that have inadvertantly had all the security permissions removed. I nor the domain administrator account can open, delete, rename or move the files or folders. I'm trying to clean the directory structure up a bit and these folders are like old Oak trees. I can't get them cut down. Is there a way I can add some sort of permissions back to these files so that I can open them up and see what they contain and then delete them?

Chris

Have you tried taking ownership of the folders/files first? You need to take ownership, then add yourself and Administrator to the permissions. You should then be able to delete / view the folders/files in question.

zoeythecat,

Yes I had permissions and I was logged into the console of my server as the Domain administrator, but it still would not delete the folder directory. When I tried to delete this directory, both from the GUI and from a command prompt, it gave me an error stating something to the effect of "Directory not found."

Deleting the directory in segments worked for me.

However, I have a question for you. How can I add permissions to a folder or file which has inadvertantly had ALL of its security permissions removed? I have a "know it all" user that has removed all the permissions from some of his network folders.

Hello there, I had this problem before, fistr step stop all services using this folder then grant yourself full permission on the folder, then you can delete or rename

Hi Chris

You can add permission by right click on the folder then click properties, select security tab then add user, e.g administrator with full access
