Hi there !

I restored some linux files to a Windows 2000 folder using Arcserver, now, I am trying to delete that folder and files .... and I am unable to do that, when I try to delete any file in that folder, Windows says "access denied",I am also unable to take ownership any file in that folder.

How do I reset this folder so that I can remove it?
How can I delete those files ?

I already tried:

1) I was able to use dir /x to display the short name of the folder and I tried to delete a file using the short filename, but it didnt work.

2) rm -d //driveletter/path using forward slashes/filename (from the w2k resource kit)

3) rm -r "//C/Program Files/BadFolder"

4) DEL \\.\driveletter:\path\filename

4) RmDir \\.\<driveletter>:\<path>\<directory>

5) Deletefxp.exe (a 3rd Party Tool)

6) xcacls.exe (from the w2k resource kit)

7) chkdsk /f

Gosh, I dont wanna format a 500 GB server ;(

Best Regards

Try to take ownership of the topmost folder. Or ad the "Administrators" group and give it "Full Control" with explorer

Celestil, Thank You for your reply !

I used Explorer and xcacls to give me "full control", but both of them failed ...

Please, any other idea ?

Try del /f or del /s. I was having some trouble deleting a folder and one of these worked for me.

Thanks,

JBruyet,

Thank you,

I tried that and it didnt work ;(

Do I have any other option ?

Best Regards

Ok Racy, try this one:

rd c:\FolderName\FolderName /s /q

BUT BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!! It will remove ALL directories under the last directory listed, full or empty. I had to use this when my ftp server got hacked.

Thank you for your reply !

Maybe my Microsoft server developed by itself a new way against hackers ... It have been impossible to delete that folder ..... ;)

Racy, I think you should double-check to make sure you have Admin rights on this machine? I'm starting to thing it's more an issue with your account. I had an issue once with a computer that wan't logging in to the network, and my account from the network was the account that had the Admin rights.

racy quick question, does the directory path and the files in it reach the 255 char limit. I have had instance where engineers would create files with names that are at least 70 chars long and in a fairly deep directory tree. Once you have reached the 255 char constraint you experience the issues you are having.
Try going into DOS and use the SUBST command to go to the deepest level of the directory path and then try deleting the subdirectories beneath that. You can then delete the directory root by using SUBST at a higher level

Turn off windows file protection

In Registry

Change the value of "SFCDisable" to equal "ffffff9d"

1 disabled, prompt at boot to re-enable
2 disabled at next boot only, no prompt to re-enable
4 enabled, with popups disabled
ffffff9d for completely disabled

Thank you for all,

I will try all suggestions in this weekend and I will return if one of them worked for me.

Best Regards

Racy

p.s -> yes, I have full administrative rights on that domain/server, but not in that folder and take ownership doesnt really work and that folder doesnt reach the 255 char limit.

First of all, I would like to thank all of you for the suggestions and replies !

Unhappily, I had to delete that partition to fix that problem ;(

Best Regards
