I just set up a wireless netork using an SMC router connected to my desktop, and a wireless card plugged into my laptop. On the same day, (June 21) I had a Cable modem installed. I have the cable from outside going into the modem, and the rj45 going into the desktop. The router goes into my destop with rj45. I can't connect to the internet. I'm thinking I should have the modem going out to my router, and from the router into the desktop. I'm totally new to routers, so I was curious, am I on the right track? Thanks. Glen A. Johnson

Both the modem and router work, but not together. I have 2 nics on the computer. They work indendant of each other, just can't plug the modem into the router, and from there into the computer and get on the internet. Here's the reply I recieved from the cable company about how to set up my router.

Glen,

Knowing the cable companies Terms of Service, I'm not surprised at their response. I would have answered the same way.

The problem you describe of the modem and router not working together is a matter of configuration. The equipment is designed to work as I pictured it. It is the ONLY way it will work and get the results you desire!

Factors that need to be addressed:
- the cabling
- the correct configuration of the two NIC's in the desktop
- the correct configuration of the router
- inactivation of the ISP's software on the computers
- the correct configuration of TCP/IP on the computers

The only thing I haven't done is the inactivation of the cable companies software. I don't understand how dns works without someone assigning the dhcp ip address.
1)Have cabled exactly as you show.
2)Both nics set for dhcp only, with no dns numbers supplied.
3)Router as IP of 172.16.10.93 with dhcp enabled.
4)Haven't done that.
5)Same as 2.

I will disable the cable companies software. Doesn't work anyways. Thanks. Glen A. Johnson

One thing I did notice last night, and someone mentioned the router may not be set up correctly yet. I can ping everybody, I can even use vnc to run my desktop from my laptop, but I can't see the other computers from network neighborhood. Is it possible there is a setting in the router that's not correct? Thanks. Glen A. Johnson

Glen,

Probably not. Don't forget the SMC is a router with a built in switch. Your computers are plugged into the switch. The router portion is involved anytime you attempt to go off-net. If you can ping and use VNC, your connectivity on the LAN is good.

I don't recall you mentioning the OS's being used. If any are Win98, the Network Neighborhood is problemmatic. Trying to get everything to show [and keep showing] is a pain. Workgroup names have to be exactly correct, default protocols have to all be correct, etc. I wouldn't sweat that right now.

Jsut a couple of other points.
- Make sure you save the router's configuration and reset the router. Saving it does not always mean it is effective.
- Try inactivating or removing the unused NIC in the desktop. Again, depending on OS, the sequence of adapters can make a difference.
