Hi, a little while ago we started to have problems with our sql server that would prevent us from accessing it from anothe server.

There are two win2k server servers withitn the same subnet, one is db server and the other one is app server (asp 3 web server actually).

The goes like this: A few months ago, suddenly, the web server would loose connection to the db server, couldnt find the reason. Solution was to restart the db server and everything continued to run ok.

Last friday, the same happened, the db server was restarted and it was ok until today... today the db server cannot be accesed from the app server using Enterprise manager or using the connection strings in asp scripts or anything. BUT we can access de db server with terminal services from the app server, so there is network connection between them.

The error that appears is that server is not running or authentication failed (we were using windows authentication) so I tried sql authentication and nothing.

From the db server we can access our databases without a problem.

I am thinking that perhaps there is some firewall between the two servers and it is blocking connection... but I would like to hear some more ideas... (servers are in miami and i am in Colombia, south america).

thanks in advance

Firewall seems most likely.

However, it could be a DNS Server issue. Try connecting using the IP address. If that works then the DNS server is not doing name resolution.

You say you tried using SQL Server authentication....do you have a SQL Server login? (If you've been using Windows Authentication, then you might not have a login using SQL Server authentication).

Was there a recent password change on your network? If so and the SQL Services start up under this account instead of the local systems account then this problem would occur if I am understanding correctly.

Michael,

That wouldn't cause this problem. The poster is having a problem connecting from a remote computer. SQL Server is running fine, the poster just can't connect.

SQLBill,
yes I do have the appropriate account in sqlserver and I have already tried to connect using the IP without good results.

Michael,
no there was no password change, it just happened today in the morning...

Has anybody got any other ideas? thanks SQLBill and Michael!

juanfd,

Just to clarify....you have TWO logins on SQL Server, correct?

One using SQL Server authentication and one using Windows authentication? (You can't use one login for both types of authentication).

Yes SQLBill that is correct, and neither of them work...
