Hello, I'm totally new at Oracle and I'm in desperate need of help. It's for a project for the university.

I have Oracle 8i Personal Edition running on Windows 98 and Developer 6.

Whenever I try to connect to Oracle through the Form Builder I get an error that tells me something about TNS or something like that (I can't check the message again now, I'm at work and I have Oracle at home).

Please can someone give me a very detailed explanation on how to configure everything properly? (Please explain it in a very basic, step by step form since I am a total newbie).

Any help is very appreciated.

Thank you,
Alfred

Dear Alfy

Have you installed the Oracle 8i on Win 98. Can you able to mount database?

I think 8i Database works on WIN NT only. If yoy are able to mount on 98 fine.

Now you have to add new database service through NET CONFIG Utility which is a part of ORACLE and Add New TNS service and log on with the new TNS [name given to new service]

Hope this will help if not pls mail me at xpert@vsnl.com and I'll write U in detail

Good Luck

Dear Alfy

Open 'ORACLE for WINDOWS'

Oracle NET8 Easy Config
Add new Service ( say 'xpert' or the name U want to give)
Networking Protocol - BEQUETH [Local Database]
Database SID - name of your database [ say HEMANT] Default ORCL
TEST
of connected in test then finish every thing is ok

if not first U have to configure the 'ORACLE LISTNER' and start the LISTNER (which is default on NT) and then again you have to follow the above process.

Hope this will work.

Good Luck

Okay. I ran into that problem before using BEQUETH. My work around was to use TCP/IP, an djust put in the ip address of your box.
Follow hemantpandya's instruction to use NET 8, but if it doesn't work, go back and use TCP/IP instead of BEQUETH (Local protocol). That solved it for me last time.
