I'm trying to figure out how to establish a connection to my work's network from home. I use AT&T Cable Modem (just bought by Comcast) and I can connect to VPN just fine, but I can't ping any of my work's internal servers like I used to be able to do using DSL. I also have my work's server IP in my TCP/IP's WINS Configuration.

It was suggested that I lower my MTU, which I've tried but was unsuccessful. I've also tried using NAT Transparency.

I've heard that there may be other conflicts (i.e. IPSec)

Any help or advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Rich

at times there are are problems with VPN support and cable internet. call your ISP if i'm not mistaken Comast has fairly good tech support. make sure there are no restrictions and if they jump the gun and say crap like "we don't give support for VPN....blah...blah..." just ask them nicely if they know of any issues or of anyone IN YOUR AREA that is useing VPN connections. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

No luck with Comcast/AT&T tech support...they just say "We don't support any VPN issues"...but it does work on a co-workers system, however he's got Win2000 and I've got Win98se and too much is different.

Still would like anyone's advice as to how to get out of this mess.
Thanks, Rich

sure, just stick here and we'll get you going. the important thing is that you know that someone in your area with the same comcast cable can run VPN.

could you list all network components/ adaptors installed on that pc?

what type of browser are you useing?

have you installed any VPN software? if so, what?

thanks "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Thanks interNETech for your input...
Network Properties/Configuration are as follows:
Client for Microsoft Networks(login to my work domain and Quick login checked)
D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter(Binding-TCP/IP checked)
TCP/IP->D-Link DFE 538TX 10/100 Adapter(only WINS configuration has my work server IP, all others empty)
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

I used to have a Microsoft VPN Adapter and NDISWAN, but supposedly that's not for Cisco's VPN 5000 Adapter I'm using now, so I removed it. I still can connect to VPN though, but shouldn't I have a Cisco VPN Adapter?

I'm using IE 6.0, and I can connect anywhere BUT my work!
Thanks, Rich

yes, there should be a VPN adaptor there. however, i am not familiar with Cisco's VPN 5000 Adapters so its possible there shouldn't be but highly unlikely. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

GUESS WHAT!!! My problem of connecting to my work's servers has been resolved!! Turns out that AT&T Cable Modem (now Comcast) doesn't like connecting using VPN and Win98...I upgraded to Win2k Pro and everything works fine! Hope that this helps anyone else in my same boat!

thats good!! hey, so it was that comcast/at&t and vpn/win98 didn't like each other? did they happen to say why? i would just like to enrich my mind a little, also i have a couple of pals on at&t turned comcast in the dallas area. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

I have just recently gotten comcast cable internet service and am trying to connect to my work network via VPN. So far, unsuccessful. I've contacted comcast tech support twice, they say they "do not support" VPN.

"Do not suppport" is different than "do not permit". So, can anyone help me to get this to work?

I'm using a Linksys router connected to the cable modem (per my employer's instructions).

Any suggestions?

paterldl, have you updated the firmware on your Linksys router? Older versions are known to barf on VPN connections.

The latest version and instructions are available from
Good luck, check back.
