Can't connect to Modem/Router Configuration setup 1

I have a new VisionNet 204ER-4 modem/router... using one pc, it works fine. Set up to obtain IP automatically, use DHCP, etc. I can get online. However, I want to set up two laptops to use ports 2 and 3. VisionNet's instruction manual says to go to internet explorer and enter 10.0.0.2 and enter the username/pw and follow the setup instructions to enable the additional ports. The issue for me is that I can't ever get to the login. I get page cannot be displayed, or my browser goes to the default search engine.

Additional things I've tried - resetting the modem to factory defaults, checking cabling, disabling firewall and anti-virus, calling tech-support.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

KC

Are these additional ports switch port or routed ports? i.e. are the new laptops on the same subnet as laptop 1 or are they meant to be on a different subnet than router1.

Also do you even get as far as being given an IP address on the other laptops from the router? If you are getting an address, can the laptops ping each other or the router default gateway?

Do you know if the router has abuiltin firewall too that needs modifing/updating?

These are some of the things I'd look at for starters albeit if you've called their tech support I'm sure they've done this already.

Hi KK - thanks for your reply... I don't think I'm getting as far as what you're asking. I can't even get to the modem/router configuration page... I reset the modem, but as soon as I connect the DSL line and check the IP Config, the default gateway changes to the ISP, instead of the 10.
0.0.2 that the manual tells me to use to reach and configure the modem. You might be able to see what I'm talking about if you go to and view the VisionNet 204/710 Router Manual. Thanks again for any insight! This is frustrating....

On the PC that connects to the itnernet ok -

Go to a command promt (start, run, type command)

then run a trace route:

eg. tracert
The first hop should be your internal router address - it may be simply that there has been a misprint in the manual!

Eg:

Z:\>tracert
Tracing route to lb1. [207.46.199.30]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 31 ms 30 ms 30 ms lo1.adsl2.iph.lon.as5587.net [213.253.167.101]
3 29 ms 28 ms 28 ms

etc.

You can see, on line 1 - the address at the end is my default gateway (internal router address)

IF you then put that address in internet explorer - you should get to the login prompt.

Also - if you are already using a PC with it, how did you configure the router, or did you simply just plug it in and switch it on?

Try that anyway it might work :)

AGH! This is so aggravating... this is what I get:

Tracing route to lb1. [207.46.19.30]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 9 ms 8 ms 8 ms starco-r1-f0-0-1.intrstar.net [66.207.234.1]
2 9 ms 9 ms 8 ms istar-r1-f1-0-0.intrstar.net [66.207.226.33]
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 * * 18 ms sl-gw11-atl-4-0-TS11.sprintlink.net [144.223.46.105]
etc....

The first line still looks like an IP belonging to my ISP, not the router... wouldn't you agree?

PS - either way, I then put that address in internet explorer - I get "The page cannot be displayed - cannot find server error.

Also - I never had to configure the router to get it to work - just plugged it in and turned it on. The manual shows the other ports being Ethernet connection as well (since it's a modem/router), and explains how to configure it. Strange, but I can't seem to get TO it to configure it.....

Anymore ideas? I'm puzzled...

Certainly does seem strange yes!

And yes I would agree the first line appears to be your ISP.

I would suggest you download the angry IP scanner:

And use it to scan the private range in use on your network...for example 10.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.255 and see if that brings up anything. What I don't get is that when you set the default gateway on your PC is set to the ISP address instead of the rotuer address.

Is the default gateway on the PC the same address as the first line of the trace route?

I've never known it be so awkward to login to a router!!

What is the PC's IP and Subnet?

You should set up the laptop the same as the PC and see what happens.

Sounds like your modem is in bridge mode. If in bridge mode and PPPoe type server, most ISP's require username and password to get on line with the DSL. Are you useing a User name password sign on from your computer ? Also I have to work on a lot of differt brands of routers and the custermer never has the doc's so I have found it easyer to do a ipconfig /all. From the Start Run CMD, then do the ipconfig /all and look at the ip gateway address that is the addess you will need to get in to the router if it is in router. I have changed the grateway address in routers to match a network that was all ready setup so the doc. info for the router would not match. Also you could try seting your computer to static ip 10.0.0.3 and the gateway ip to 10.0.0.2, mast to 255.255.255.0 and then try geting in to the router.

OK - finally got a call back from the ISP - they've changed to factory default software to be their own settings - which is the first port for DSL and the other three for future use (something video). The tech told me to set my computer ip to 10.0.0.10 and then I could get to the router and reconfigure... the issue is now, that there are so many settings to configure that I can't figure it out. The ISP doesn't support the changes, and they use a third party for support that isn't the most brilliant group in the world (every answer is unplug for 30 minutes and call them back). So... anyone know where I can get the original configuration from? I know I can save the current file to my pc, and then upload the default - I just don't know where to get it; it's either that, or figure out how to reset it back to the REAL factory defaults. To top it all off, my husband got a PS2 for Christmas and wants to get online... let the fun begin! :)

Thanks guys!

try a google search for the manual for your router and find out how to reset it back to factory - there may be well a "Maintenance" or "Backup" secion in your router that lets you do this.

A lot of the bigger ISP's have the BIOS's flash with there own custom bios's so the setup is easy for the custurmer. The only way to change this is to download a differ bios flash and re program. Not all modems will re flash. I have flashed a lot of SpeedStream 5660's and 5200's one time with a bell Canada flash that I could not re flash afterwards and all the seting had to be reset ever time a reset was done on the modem.

Trying to set up Linksys Router (WRT54G) to Westell modem on BellSouth DSL software. Failure Message: Cannot get a IP address from PPPoE server. Have repeated Linksys set up instruction several times and without success. Anyone have suggestions?

Do you get an IP address when the modem is plugged directly into your PC?

Make sure you cycle the power after makeing program changes on the Linksys Routers. I find that thay will not connect after you make changes untill you cycle the power.

1. Modem must be in bridged mode
a. If modem is not in bridged modem "surf" into modem by typing 192.168.1.254. (Important, direct connect to modem to place it in bridge mode!)

2. Try Linksys setup again, make sure your username/pw has @bellsouth.net

3.The modem must be bridged otherwise the DHCP in the modem could care less what you have after it and try to assign IP addresses to those devices

According to this post: thread916-1171556, he had to clone the MAC address of the first computer. Will this ever be necessary or only in the situation of this GTE zone with verizon?

Do certain DSL modems store the MAC of the primary computer and block other MACs from getting an IP (for instance if we unhook the primary, power cycle everything with a secondary computer connected to the modem, still no IP)?.

Trying to set up Linksys Router (WRV54G) to Westell dsl router modem on BellSouth DSL. Have attempted all I know at this point and can't get it working. Linksys tells me it can't obtain the IP and wants me to put my modem into Bridged mode. When I did this I was unable to get to the internet with the either device. I have the right log on name and passwords in the linksys.

1)If the modem does not work in the briddged mode what do I do
2) Can i get it to work without briddged mode if so how do I set up the Linksys. The support was not helping much and bellsouth won't help as well.

If anyone can help plae let me know & Thank You
