Can't connect to Internet

I have an iMac with Windows XP on a partition. The Mac portion connects to high-speed Internet with no problem.

When in Windows, Network Connections shows that I am connected. But neither IE nor Firefox will connect to it. So, it seems to be some kind of Windows issue.

Can anyone help? What other info do you need? I am not real tech savvy about Windows.

It keeps trying to connect, then eventually stops.

I connected (just long enough to see that it worked) to an unsecured network.

When I try to connect to WPA networks, I get a box for the password.

When I try to connect to unmarked, presumably WEP, secured networks, the same thing happens as with BREAKERS, i.e., it just keeps trying. No password box.

What type of Router (or Modem) do you have? The documentation that came with it (or the manufacturer's web site) should show you how to use your Browser and the Routers IP Address to get to the Router settings, including the Wireless Security Settings, where you can check these and see what the Wireless Key is, the type of Wireless Key, or change it. If your Imac is connecting Wirelessly, then do not change the Wireless Key details, just note it down to make sure you are entering the correct details in XP, and that they match the details in the Router.

The documentation will also show you how to reset the security of the Router back to the manufacturer's default (again, doing so might effect the Imac).

It's a router, supplied and set up by the service. No documentation. Guess I'll have to contact them. I know the password they gave me. It is not WEP nor WPA.

Thanks for all your help.

Harry, yes contact the ISP service, as it sounds like the ROUTER does not allow you to connect in XP...

or as a last attempt, uninstall the Wireless Adapter from the Device Manager, and reboot, letting Windows reinstall the driver...

PS: if you have installed another wireless control app, some come with the drivers, then uninstall it and let Windows control the wireless... usually with two wireless control programs running, both will try to manage the wireless and both will fail...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

What password are you referring to ("Supplied by ISP")? The password for Wireless connection, the E-mail and logon to ISP one, or the password that you need to access the Router? If you mix them around then you will have trouble.

You can try 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, as they are common IP's for a Router, but there are several others too, and you might just be guessing for ever. I believe you ran IPconfig /all, there is a good chance that the default gateway mentioned in that is the actual IP Address for the Router. The password for logging on to the Router is often the word Admin, and the username is also Admin, but again this all varies.

Besides all that your actual Wireless Key can be WPA, WEP, or several versions of WPA, or Unsecured. Then there is things like AES and TKIP (or both) which must match XP's Wireless settings too.

With so many variables you can see why it is necessary to check the Router.
