Hi,

I have the following problem. I have a SBS2003 server and all the computers in the office is under a domain managed by the SBS. We are connected to the internet with an ADSL Line through a Linksys Wifi router. Internet works fine. The problem is when I try to connect my laptop, which is also under the domain, to the internet at home with an Ethernet Adsl modem, I can see the interface with my browser (192.168.1.1) but I can't access the internet! Same thing if I use a wifi dongle connected to a wimax connection, no internet connection! It is not only my laptop but all the PCs at the office that are under the domain.

By the way, I am the administrator and I have all privileges.

Does anyone have an idea?

Many thanks in advance...

LF

If the domain is SBS Premium you may have ISA installed on your works network. Is so the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer will be filled in. When you are out of the office you will need to check and switch off the proxy setting.

(Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings and untick use proxy)

Hi,

Thanks for answering, but I have SBS 2003 SP2. I don't think I have ISA installed, how may I know this?

Something I'm sure, I don't have any proxies in my LAN Settings.

I don't think the problem is there...

What AV is installed on your laptops? Also make sure you do not have a static IP address.

Also when out of the office can you run from a command prompt ipconfig /all and then see if you can ping the Default Gateway and the DNS servers. If you can ping the DNS server then try and pring and post the results.

I have Avast, but it does not worf even if I disable it.

In my TCP/IP Settings everything is set to obtain automatically, but something's weird, I always have the same IP Address on the network here (192.168.15.50). Could this be the problem?

Here is the result of the ipconfig/all (It's in french, and the connection I want to use is New Profile1, (USB Modem):

Many thanks for helping me by the way, getting crazy with this !!!

Check the TCP/IP properties of the laptop's Network Adapter. Part of setup of SBS is to point your client PC's NIC to the gateway IP of the SBS server. If there's an IP address under "Use the following DNS server addresses" then it should be changed to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to work in other environments.

I've had SBS setup ask me to change the TCP/IP properties of the client's NIC to point to the server for the ConnectComputer process, maybe that's what's happening here.

In my TCP/IP Settings everything is set to obtain automatically :(

Any idea guys? I'm still stuck on this !!

When you are at home are you logging on to the laptop locally, or are you leaving the "log on to" dropdown on the log on screen with your domain name rather than the laptop name?

(hope that makes sense) :)

Yes it makes sense ;)

I actually tried both, i.e. to log on to the domain and also locally on the computer, but that does not change anything. The windows firewall is disabled, avast is disabled. Quite incredible. I have a PC at ,y office that is not under the domain, and it works correctly with any other connection !! I really don't understand anything.

If you can log on locally to the laptop, the domain issue is probably irrelevant.

Leaving the Wifi Dongle problems aside for the moment, can you access the internet at home using your ADSL Modem and a different PC/laptop? - ie, can you verify that the ADSL modem is actually functional, and that it is making the connection and authenticating?

Does your laptop have a dial up networking connection that it uses to initiate the connection via the modem in the first place?

Yes I can access internet with my DLink 2540U Modem router at home with my personal pc, but it does not work with my office laptop. It means that the ADSL Connection is actually good...

The DLink 2540U looks more like router than a modem, so I will now assume that there is no DUN connection required on your laptop.

If you start your laptop up in "safe mode with networking" (press F8 when it is booting up), can you access the internet via this router?

I'll try this, thanks. I confirm that the DLink 2540U is a Modem Router...

Note that each & every PC connected to the domain here at my office have the same problem. But 2 pcs heva not joined the domain, and both don't have this problem.

I have something interesting when I do an nslookup yahoo.com, here's the result:

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Impossible de trouver le nom de serveur pour l'adresse 192.168.15.1 : Timed
out
*** Les serveurs par défaut ne sont pas disponibles
Serveur : UnKnown
Address: 192.168.15.1

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.

Traduction from French to English of the first sentence (Impossible de trouver le nom de serveur pour l'adresse 192.168.15.1 : Timed out) is:
"Can't find server name for the address 192.168.15.1"

Actually, 192.168.15.1 is the IP Address of my sbs, its name is sbs2003.

I also can't ping this address.

Hope this was usefull...

Cheers & Thanks

I confirm that it also does not work in safe ,ode with networking...

Your DLink 2540U should act as a DHCP server, does it ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

I think so... note that it's not only with the DLink, any other connection does not work...

Your profile 1 is, IMHO, not properly configured:
DHCP activé. . . . . . . . . . . : Non
Should be Oui (ie Yes)

Hope This Helps, PH.

Profil1 is a usb 3G modem and we can't access its configuration. I'm pretty sure it is not the problem, as I said, when i try to connect directly to my dlink modem through ethernet prot it still does not work, even if DHCP is activated...
