hello everyone!!!!!!!!!!
can anybody tell me please how to setup TCP/IP to browse my network (ntserver 4.0) instead of using netbeui.
XP doesn't support netbeui and i know i can install it from the installation cd, but i want to stop using netbeui, since sooner or later it will disappear.

Thanks in advance,

Aldi

search microsoft's web site for install instructions. You will just go to control panel/network applet/add TCP/IP protocol.

consider this site to unstand TCP/IP subnetting and ip address assignments:

If you want to do away with NetBEUI, you'll have to move to preferably DNS. Vince Grice

Hi guys thank you for answering:

i think i didn't explain myself on my question.

i have tcp/ip installed on the PDC (nt server 4.0) and we have a dns, the problem is that clients running win98 can not browse or map network drives on the network if netbeui is not installed.

how can i fix this problem i don't want to use netbeui anymore since some of our employees are going to connect from home and they have winXP.

Thanks again,

aldi

Inorder for clients to browse the network, you need to install WINS service on the server. Also on client computers install and configure TCP/IP property to use WINS.

thank you aktaton,

i will do that

Also, if you are talking just Windows98 here than on the Windows98 workstations you need to make sure of the following:

(1) Go into Network Properties on the Windows98 workstation (Via Control Panel)
(2) On the first screen under the General Tab I believe, you will see "Client for MS Networks". Double click on this. Make sure you have the checkmark for "use this domain(Or something like that, i'm not in front of a Win98 workstation) and then make sure the domain name is entered. click ok to get out of this window
(3) Now click on the Identificatin tab. The 2nd tab you need to enter the domain name here (this is the workgroup tab). By default it is the workgroup name. Change this to your network domain name.

To recap, you need to have your Domain name entered in 2 places on your windows98 machines. Restart the machine once this change is made and then see if you can browse.

yes and if you want the xp (or NT & 2000) boxes to see the resources on the 98 boxes, make sure to check the boxes "i want other users to access my files" and the " I want other users to access my printer" under the properties of the client for ms networks in 98's network settings. That will advertise your shares.
