Can't access slave HD or CD-ROM

Due to a loud noise, I disconnected 2 HDs and CD-ROM from the motherboard to check that it wasn't one of the fans acting up. It did turn out to be one of the HDs but nothing major.

Upon reconnection, I found that I could't access the CD-ROM or slave HD - they appear in device manager but with an exclamation mark stating Windows cannot load the drivers for those devices and a 'Generic STEALTH DVD SCSI CdRom Device' is there which I've never seen before (also unable to load drivers). The master HD is fine and I've tried replacing the slave HD with a CD-RW drive just to see if that works but it doesn't (I know it's wrong but it's worked before). BIOS settings are the same, jumpers are set the same, nothing has been changed. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Check your bios to make sure they are showing up there. Then go into windows and remove the drives that have the exclamation mark. Reboot. Windows should refind them.

Cheers

Thx to all who respond ;)

I tried this today, just with the CD-ROM drive. It shows up in bios so I went into Windows, removed it and rebooted as necessary but the problem still remains. I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

Make sure when you reinstalled the cables to the drive, you didn't put them on backwards, this will stop them from working.

Remember on the cable the red goes to zero pin on hard drive...........Also some bios need to be set for hard drive or for a cdrom as the device....as well were the primary and secondary cables hooked back as original.... did primary cable have the master and slave drive and the secondary have the cdrom? and were they reconnected as such?

It sounds like the ribbon cable is not completely attached to the motherboard. Best be is to take the cable out of the machinane and start all over, remembering that the red line on the cable is pin 1 and on the CD and hard drive that pin should be closed to the power connector on the drive. Pin 1 on the motherboard is shown on the board its self.

One other big problem could be the way you jumper the drives, make sure hard drive is set for master with slave and cd is set to slave!

Thanks for the help, guys. Yes, the primary cable was connected to the master + slave and the secondary cable was connected to the CD-ROM. They can only go in one way on the motherboard, HDs and CD-ROM so the cables aren't backwards. Looks like both cables could be bad or maybe it's the motherboard.

maybe the drivers expect the cdrom to be in the right place on the ribbon and on the proper IDE cable and you have moved them. IDE 0,1,2,3:

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Try a different set of IDE cables, if that doesn't work.. Try to find another HD around and install it as the slave.. if it can be found, and installed you have your answer.
