Can't access internet while Cisco VPN Client connected

I am using Cisco VPN Client version 5.0.03.0530 on a new HP Intel based laptop running Vista.
When I use the VPN to access our office network, I cannot access the internet. I get timeout errors on the browser (Firefox or IE). The strange thing about it is that when I first connect with the VPN, I can bring up the browser and it will retrieve the current home web page. But you cannot navigate away while connected to the VPN or refresh the browser.

Tunneling is turned on at our office and on the client (UDP)
Allow local LAN Access is also enabled on the client

My IT people are stumped....any suggestions?

You need to allow split tunneling. What is the vpn server? a Cisco device or Windows?

I believe we have a windows device for the server however, Split Tunneling is turned on. As I stated above, I can see the internet when I 1st bring up the browser...then all I get is timeouts.

But you said you bring up the browser while the vpn is connecting, and it goes away when the vpn connects. Double-click the network icon in the taskbar when the vpn is connected, select properties, tcp/ip properties, advanced, and one of those tabs will allow you to choose your gateway. By default, "Use remote network gateway" is checked---you'll want to uncheck that, and you'll be good to go.

Let me clarify....I connect via the VPN. I can then usually open the browser and it will connect to the default web address. However, if I try to navigate off that page, I get timeout errors. It's almost like the VPN is now taking up all the bandwidth. My IT people tell me everything is okay on the server side and none of our other remote people are having this problem.

to your suggestion, I am running Vista (maybe that's the problem)...when I go to the taskbar and bring up Network connections, I have the VPN and my wireless network connection listed. If I select properties on either, I can then go to tcp/ip properties for IPv6 or IPv4. Checking all screens, there is no option to select/deselect "Use remote network gateway.

Yeah...not sure about the remote gateway...you sure that your homepage isn't loading because of the cookie that's saved? Clear cookies and try it...but I'm not sure how to work this whole thing in Vista...sorry...
