can't access BEFSR41 web based utility

i'm using a BEFSR41 router with 2 PC's connected to it. One with WIN98 SE, everything works fine in here. The other PC is running under XP Home. I am getting an invalid IP so i set it to static IP. Everything on my LAN Settings are "unchecked". I can ping the router but I can't access the setup page. Also, i can ping a web site IP address but not its DNS. Can please somebody help me! thanks.

What static ip did you set?

The default of the router is an address of 192.168.1.1. Its DHCP assigned range is addresses from 192.168.1.100 -- 192.168.1.149. So a static IP of 192.168.1.2 would get you into the router.

The invalid IP bothers me. Try this first, and after the reboot go back to automatic addressing:

I have it on the same IP range as the router.

To set the static IP it needs to be on the same network mask as the router, and it needs to be outside the DHCP scope of the DHCP server on the router.

So,

1. Use only IP addressing schemes that are reserved for private addresses.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of the IP address space for private internets (local networks):

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255


Also, IP addresses in the range of 169.254.0.0 -169.254.255.255 are reserved for Automatic Private IP Addressing.

These IP's should not be used on the Internet.

2. Use as static IPs only those legal addresses that are within your subnet mask and not within the DHCP scope of the DHCP server on the router.
