Hi Guys,

I have a problem telnet to one of the server. It is using tcp wrapper and even thought I have edited my IP address, it still refuse access.

The strange thing is that normally it will show a restricted host message on other server if tcp wrapper is installed but not this one.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

D:\>telnet 192.168.20.10
Connecting To 192.168.20.10...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23:
Connect failed

It just hanged/halt there whenever I do a telnet.

I have check the telnet daemon(using hyper terminal) and it seem to be running
#> ps -ef|grep inet
It returns the result

root 15882 1 0 Jul 12 ? 0:00 inetd -s

It returns a different result for another machine using the same command

root 204 1 0 May 10 ? 0:35 /usr/sbin/inetd -s

There's somehow different in the process show in ps -ef

And how do I check whether the TCP wrapper is enabled ?

Any other advises that I can try to troubleshoot ?

Thanks in advance for all advises.

can you:
grep telnet /etc/inetd.conf

and post the result here?

HI,

netstat -a | grep telnet. You should see telnet port 23 is listening.

Hi Guys,

I have somehow determined the problem. It lies in our either our Cisco catalyst switch 2950 or router which have restricted a specific IP address to do telnet only.

Still cannot determine whether it is block by the catalyst switch or the router. Anyone know whether the switch can block port 23 or the router can block it ?

Our inhouse network administrator stated that it should be the router as only router can block the port 23 but my gut feeling lies in the switch. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is set by our previous administrator and he has left unprofessionally without disclosing the privilige password.Worst of all is we do not have a backup configuration of both the router/switch!

And anyone out there know of any program that is able to crack the privilege password of the switch and router ?
It would be most helpful.

Thanks GUYS !

HI,

What type of switch and router?. Usually you can block at router not switch.

regards,
feroz
