A software program being used on a Windows 2000 server needs to be able to see port 2468 on an XP client.
The check is to try to telnet to port 2468.
We cannot do so.
The XP firewall is off.
Internet Explorer Security is set to medium low.

What else can we check?

Well, do you have a service running on your XP-client that listens on port 2468? If not, nothing will happen when you try to telnet to this port.

For using the *ordinary* telnet to the XP-clients shell (access to the C:\ disk), you need to have the telnet service up and running.

For security reasons though ... it is not advisable to have the telnet service permanently running on any win2k/xp-client.

What type of software is this?

This is software that tracks internet browse usage.
SpectorCNE.

I will get the telnet service started and let you know what happens...for testing purposes.

Thanks.

Telnet service uses tcp port 23. If the service is using tcp port 2468 then you should see it listed when you type "netstat -a". You can also try "telnet localhost 2468" on the xp computer.

lgarner: That is correct. I did not indicate that the *ordinary* telnet service would listen to port 2468 either.

lmoe: when trying lgarners tip can you see port 2468 listed on the screen? I know that a lot of those polling-tools that are available ... very often requires some kind of client install on the computers it should get statistics from.

I took a quick look at the homepage of the product mentioned and read about a "Recorder component".

"The core component of Spector CNE is the Recorder. The Recorder will automatically capture and record all PC and Internet activity, including: Emails sent & received; Web Based Email Services such as Hotmail, Yahoo mail, etc…; Web Site Browsing; Chat and Instant Message Conversations; Keystrokes typed; Applications launched and continuous Snapshot Recording of the PC (much like a surveillance video system).

The Recorder is remotely installed and managed on client PCs over your Windows network."

As far as I can see ... the usuage of your product requires the recorder component to be installed on any client that you want to monitor. Have you verified that this component is installed on the XP computer?

My lucky guess would be that it is the recorder component that listens to port 2468 as well :)

The Recorder client IS installed.
I will be at the client site testing this latter next week.
