Hi, hope some one can help me

I have been using legato for about 2 years with hardly any problems, yesterday i needed to recover a file from tape but networker user could not find the server, i went on the server and it was reporting that the server could not be found, i then went to the services (NT) and portmap, nsrexecd and nsrd are not running.

I tried to start protmap and got the error "error 3, the system cannot find the file Specified"

This was also the error message when trying to start the other services (nsrd & nsrexecd)

I hope some one can help

Thanks in advance

Some things you can check.

1) Open the properties of Networker User executable. Under the shortcut tab make sure the servername is added :
....winworkr.exe" -s servername.domain.com

2) For the portmap service not found, copy the portmap.exe file from another server back into the same directory. Server with the same operating system.

3) Backup services not starting. This could be tricky, but I'd suggest re-installing the networker software.

Do you have the NetWorker services starting from the system account or a created account? I've seen some isolated flakiness when attempting to start services controlled by accounts other than the system account.

There are only two reasons why NetWorker Services would not start.

1. Databases corruption

2. Name resolution.

Any recent changes in your network?. IP changes?. Not necesarilly on the server, it could be on a storage node.

To check for corruption, just rename them one by one, first mm, second, index, third res files. If the service start when you rename one of these, that is it.

That's not necessarily true. There are quite a few reasons why the services may not start. Another reason has to do with permissions, and the account that the services start under. If the account the service starts under is locked out of certain files or directories, the services won't start either.

Yet another reason is faulty drives or scsi connections. Those will be reflected in the system event log.

Thank you for your responses, i have logged this call with legato and they called straight back and helped me get a backup for over easter, they say the problem is a corrupt database and i need to re-install the software or upgrade to the newest version of legato.

Thank you again for your time

Phil,

Just in case it's a little easier than that - have a look for a file called liblocal.dll (I'm assuming you're running the NT version of NetWorker).

We have this happen every now and then where this file just disappears and the NetWorker services won't start - we get a 'cannot find file' message as well.

Copying the file in from another server fixes the problem every time.
